At first, artists played and sang the sanxian by themselves. In the late Qing Dynasty, there were female drum artists, accompanied by qin players playing the sanxian. The lyrics are elegant and sophisticated, the tunes are gorgeous and elegant, and the stories are tortuous and charming, which is in sharp contrast to the rough folk customs of the local area. In the 1950s, there were hundreds of people learning Northeastern Drum in Wuchang area.
