Yushe County is located in the western foot of Taihang Mountain, in the south-central part of Shanxi Province. It borders Zuoquan and Heshun in the east, Qixian in the west, Wuxiang in the south, Taigu County and Yuci District in the north, and is accessible from all sides. The county still has distinctive folk arts such as Overlord Whip, Tutan Yangko, and Folk Fire. Yushe Overlord Whip has a long history of more than 1,700 years. Legend has it that in the late Western Jin Dynasty, Shi Le, a native of Yushe, was dissatisfied with the rule of the Western Jin Dynasty and led the people to revolt. The people responded one after another, and his power continued to expand and he was invincible. He established the State of Zhao, which was known as the Later Zhao in history. He was also known as the "King of the Five Barbarians", and Shi Le was also called "Overlord" by the local people. After establishing the Later Zhao, Shi Le was determined to dominate the Central Plains. After each victory in a battle, the soldiers danced with joy, raised their guns and whipped them. This improvisational dance form was introduced from the military camp to the people, and evolved into a folk dance art for local people to pray to ghosts and gods, celebrate a good harvest, and celebrate happy events. It inherited the intention of King Zhao to dominate the Central Plains. It originated in Yushe, so this dance form is called Yushe Overlord Whip. Yushe Overlord Whip initially used the end of the whip to knock on the limbs as its basic movement, and later evolved into 10 kinds of patterns: knocking, hitting, pushing, picking, turning, flipping, swinging, shaking, swinging, and throwing. Overlord Whip combines fast and slow, and combines hardness and softness. Sometimes the rhythm is bright and sonorous; sometimes the rhythm is slow and gentle. It is colorful and full of changes, fully expressing the joy of the working people after the harvest and their longing for a better life, and is deeply loved by the people. The traditional folk dance of Overlord Whip is a folk art form with a long history and culture. It combines dance, martial arts, and sports. It has complex whip techniques and unique style, and has a distinct mass sports nature. For people who have been engaged in performing for a long time, the Overlord Whip can not only exercise the body, enhance physical fitness and promote blood circulation, but also enhance the performer's fighting ability through long-term training and play a role in self-defense. It is an extremely precious folk cultural heritage.
