🎧  Listen to Introduction

Shi Le (274333), courtesy name Shilong, was a Jie ethnic group native to Wuxiang, Shangdang (now north of Yushe County, Shanxi Province). He was the founder of the Later Zhao during the Sixteen Kingdoms period and was known in history as Emperor Ming of the Later Zhao. He was the only slave emperor in history. During his reign, Shi Le attached great importance to agriculture, encouraged farming and sericulture, employed Han intellectuals, respected Confucianism, rectified customs, and eliminated bad habits, playing a positive role in promoting harmonious coexistence among ethnic groups and advancing cultural, educational, and economic development. Shi Le died in the fourth year of Jianping in the Later Zhao Dynasty (339 AD) and was buried on the north mountain of Zhaowang Village, Beizhai Township, Yushe County. (The other three versions are Xingtai, Wuxiang, and Lingchuan.) Shi Le had an important and special influence in Chinese history. Yushe, Heshun, Wuxiang, and even Zuoquan and the middle section of Taihang Mountain in Qi County have left a large number of rumors and relics about Shi Le and the Later Zhao Dynasty to varying degrees. These are also the common wishes and common values expressed by the areas of Shi Le's hometown dispute for the study of Shi Le in the Later Zhao Dynasty. Today, there are countless place names and legends related to Shi Le, such as Shecheng, Shiyuan, Queen Liu, Longmen, Wuyuan, Maling, Yangtian, King Zhao, Baoxia, Shangchengnan, Xiachengnan, Beizhai, Nanzhai, Guanzhai, etc. Shi Le culture had a great influence on Yushe, not only leaving behind valuable village and town monuments, but also his principles of advancing despite difficulties, valuing literature and worshipping Buddhism, embracing all cultures, reforming and innovating, not willing to lag behind, and having lofty ambitions, which all had positive significance for the development of Yushe. In particular, the folk dance Bawangbian, which was created to celebrate the victory of the battle, played a positive role in the inheritance and prosperity of Yushe folk art, and has important research value in folk literature, art, religion, and history.
