The Legend of Shi Naian
The legend of Shi Naian is a folk literature project in the sixth batch of representative projects of Suzhou's municipal intangible cultural heritage. In the Heyang Mountain area of Zhangjiagang, the legend of Shi Naian has been circulating among the people since the end of the Yuan Dynasty, for more than 600 years. The people in the Heyang Mountain area have passed it down from generation to generation and it has been passed down to this day. Since the 1970s, folk art workers in Zhangjiagang have collected more than 40 stories about the legend of Shi Naian in the Heyang Mountain area. There are mainly three categories: the first category is the legend about Shi Naian's fearlessness, giving advice to the people, helping the poor, socializing with colleagues and extraordinary wisdom in the Heyang Mountain area of Zhangjiagang. For example, "Shi Naian's Clever Plan to Suppress the Bandits", "Comparing the Strength to Deal with the Ruffians", "Rewards for Crashing into Official Ships", "Writing Poems to Punish Evil Youngsters", "Fair Judgment of Cases", etc., reflect his fearlessness; "The Origin of Shijia Bridge", "A Piece of Evidence", "Giving Paintings to Help the Poor", "Helping Tenants with Schemes" are legends about his giving advice to the people and helping the poor; "Three Tests of the Master", "Bitter Remonstration", "Leveling the Grave", "Rebuilding the Soul-Calling Tomb" are legends about his treatment of relatives, colleagues and socializing with peers; "The Legend of Planting Boy Glutinous Rice", "Playing Chess and Watching the Sky", "Raising the Beam on a Defeatable Day", "The Tenth Day of the Third Month to Sweep the Sacrifices", "The Golden Cicada Escapes from its Shell" are legends about his knowledge of astronomy and geography and his extraordinary intelligence. The second category is the legend about Shi Naian's creation, such as "Writing a Book to Give to My Daughter", "Reciting Poems to Refuse a Job", "Imitating Arhats with the Heavenly Gangs and Earthly Demons", "Seeking the Origin of Water Margin", "The Origin of "Flea on the Drum", etc. The third category is the legend about Shi Naian's whereabouts. Shi Nai'an once worked as a private school teacher in Guntangan, west of Heyang Mountain. Shi Nai'an was friendly with the abbot of Yongqing Temple in Heyang Mountain, and once stayed in Yongqing Temple in Heyang Mountain to write "Water Margin". In addition, there are some legends to be sorted out and published. The legends of Shi Nai'an in the Heyang Mountain area of Zhangjiagang are distinctive, telling the life and creation of Shi Nai'an in the Heyang Mountain area from multiple angles and aspects; the oral narrators include farmers, Yongqing Temple gatekeepers, cultural station cadres, and primary and secondary school teachers, with different levels, and the same story often has several oral "versions". The legends of Shi Nai'an have vivid plots and vivid characters. Through these folk legends, a Shi Nai'an who knows astronomy and geography, can predict and calculate, is good at literature and martial arts, protects kindness, hates evil, dares to love and hate, wanders around the world, and has a sense of justice is created, which has literary value. Many legends involve the historical background, living environment and characters of Shi Naian's creation of "Water Margin", which has important academic research value for exploring and studying the causes, themes and image creation of Liangshan heroes of "Water Margin". For a long time, the author of "Water Margin" and whether there is Shi Naian have always been the focus of academic debate. The legend of Shi Naian in Zhangjiagang is flesh and blood, and it has been six hundred years old. It can clarify some issues from a level. In addition, the life of farmers, citizens, intellectuals and other social classes in the late Yuan Dynasty and early Ming Dynasty reflected in the legend of Shi Naian has historical and cultural value in helping us understand the social conditions, people's livelihood and sufferings of this particular historical period.
