Dangshan New Year Pictures
New Year pictures are an ancient folk art in my country. They reflect the customs and beliefs of the masses, and embody people's hopes for the future. They are the artworks of the Chinese nation to pray for blessings and welcome the new year. Dangshan New Year pictures originated in the middle of the Qing Dynasty. At that time, they were called "picture cards". In the Daoguang period, the literati Li Guangting wrote in an article: "After sweeping the house, they put up New Year pictures, which is just a child's play." New Year pictures were named after this. According to relevant information, during the Qing Dynasty, Dangshan New Year pictures included "Judge", "Guan Gong", "Five Sons Passing the Imperial Examination", and "Twenty-Four Filial Piety Pictures". Woodblock New Year pictures included "Door God" and "Kitchen God", all of which have the meaning of guarding the house, loyalty, filial piety, chastity, and hope that their children will become successful. The content of New Year pictures remained basically unchanged during the Republic of China. After the founding of New China, Dangshan New Year pictures gained new vitality. Due to geographical reasons, Dangshan New Year pictures were influenced by the New Year pictures of Weifang, Shandong and Zhuxian Town, Henan, but they are different from the New Year pictures of the two places. The woodblock New Year paintings use Dangshan pear wood as the master plate. The wood is delicate and suitable for carving. The lines are carved with both yin and yang, the lines are thick and solid, the colors are gorgeous and solemn, and the local flavor is strong. The double-sided New Year paintings use watercolor paper and watercolor, gouache pigments, and charcoal powder to wipe the shadows of the face and hands, which is different from the painting method of other New Year paintings. The New Year paintings (including door gods) are colorful, thick and bright, with strong contrast and magnificence. The pictures are full and compact, with both virtual and real, iron wire outlines, smooth lines, hard and soft, and the expression form is symmetrical, the technique is exaggerated, full of momentum, and unique folk interest. It is a New Year painting with unique Dangshan local characteristics, and it is unique in the field of national New Year paintings. In the 1970s and 1990s, Dangshan New Year paintings reached their peak, with more than 60 people painting New Year paintings in the county. After the 1970s, the Dangshan County Cultural Center held art exhibitions and New Year painting training classes every year, focusing on the creation of New Year paintings. Some of them won the provincial excellent New Year painting creation award. In 1985, Sun Zongxi and Fan Fengling were accepted as members of the Anhui Province New Year Painting Research Association, and Sun Zongxi was elected as a director of the New Year Painting Research Association. The main New Year painters represented by Sun Zongxi and Fan Fengling, as well as Cui Jixu, Yu Zhongxing, Huang Xingqiao and others successively participated in the creation of New Year paintings in Dangshan. Zhu Xiuying, a female painter from Dangshan who worked in Hefei in the 1980s, also engaged in the creation of Dangshan New Year paintings. At the same time, she led a large number of young people who love New Year paintings to participate in it, and Dangshan New Year paintings presented a thriving and gratifying scene. Over the past few decades, Dangshan New Year paintings have entered the national New Year painting market and have a place in the national New Year painting circle. 112 New Year paintings have been published by art publishing houses in nine provinces, cities and autonomous regions, including Anhui, Henan, Hebei, Shandong and Jiangsu, and distributed throughout the country, and are deeply loved by the vast number of urban and rural people. In 1984, the Anhui Provincial Department of Culture held an exhibition to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, and the New Year painting "Chinese Martial Arts" created by Fan Fengling won the third prize. In 1985, the Dangshan County Annals recorded 19 New Year paintings published by Sun Zongxi, Fan Fengling, Yu Zhongxing and Cui Jixu in provincial publishing houses. The color pages of the Dangshan County Annals include the New Year paintings of Sun Zongxi and Fan Fengling. On March 23, 1997, the "Art World Style" column of the Anhui Daily Art Special Page published a biography written by Zhu Xiukun, a national first-class artist, vice chairman of the Anhui Artists Association, and president of the Anhui New Year Painting Research Association, "Rooted in the grassroots, writing tirelessly to record the figure painter Fan Fengling." The article introduces the New Year paintings created by Fan Fengling and gives him high praise: He absorbs the characteristics of folk New Year paintings and innovates them. The New Year paintings he draws are colorful but not vulgar, with strong contrast but not dull. They are deeply loved by the vast number of urban and rural people and have high appreciation value.
