Zhejiang
🎧  Listen to Introduction

Lacquer sculpture is lacquer art sculpture. Baifeng lacquer sculpture originated in the Ming and Qing Dynasties and is mainly distributed in Baifeng, Guoju, Shangyang, Chuanshan and other areas of Beilun District. Lacquer sculpture was mostly used to decorate high-end wooden furniture such as flower bed in the old days, and is closely related to the lives of local people. It has a rich variety, ranging from large indoor furniture such as beds and cabinets to small daily necessities such as buckets and fruit boxes, reflecting the living habits and customs of local people. The furniture and daily necessities from the Ming and Qing Dynasties and the Republic of China preserved by the people of Baifeng today are as bright as new with their painted parts, which shows the exquisite craftsmanship of the artists at that time. The lacquer sculpture technique is complicated, that is, using raw lacquer to pile up clay into various three-dimensional patterns such as dragons and phoenixes, flowers and birds, and then paint and gild them, and finally paint and color them. There are eight main processes: polishing, plastering, drawing, lacquer sculpture, sanding, painting, gilding, and glazing. The current representative inheritor, Tang Meiding, is nearly 80 years old and is the third batch of district-level inheritors in Beilun District. He was born into a lacquer art family and learned from his father at the age of 18. He has been practicing art for more than 40 years. His representative works include "Dragon and Phoenix Embracing Couplets", "Pine and Crane Picture", "Carp Leaping Over the Dragon Gate", "A Thousand Colors", etc. Information source: Ningbo Cultural Center (Ningbo Exhibition Hall Ningbo Intangible Cultural Heritage Protection Center) (No pictures yet, welcome to provide.)
