Hefeng "Liuzi Opera", also known as "Yanghualiu", has a long history in Hefeng County. It was initially formed in the Song and Yuan Dynasties and flourished in the Ming and Qing Dynasties. It is one of the five local operas in Enshi Prefecture and is known as the only Hubei opera art. It is now mainly spread in towns such as Zouma, Wuli, and Railway. Hefeng (formerly known as Rongmei), due to its long Tusi system and its geographical location, has a relatively stable political environment and a remote natural environment, which provides a good soil for the development of folk culture such as "Liuzi Opera". Rongmei Tusi has always attached great importance to the openness and exchanges of politics, economy, and culture. Especially in the late Ming and early Qing dynasties, the development of Rongmei's industry and agriculture promoted the prosperity of culture and art, forming the heyday of Rongmei Tusi Opera and becoming the opera art center of the Hunan-Hubei border area. During the Tusi era, more than ten opera houses were built in the territory. After more than 300 years of circulation, "Liuzi Opera" has formed a complete, systematic, and unique vocal and music system among the people of Hefeng, becoming one of the local operas loved by the Tujia people and known as the "living fossil" of the Tujia national opera. Its musical system belongs to the upper and lower sentence structure of the banqiang body, the core tune is the zhenggong tune, and the main instrument is the big tube huqin. The excavation and arrangement of Hefeng's "Liuzi Opera" achieved certain results in the last century. In October 1955, Hefeng Liuzi Opera participated in the Hubei Folk Opera Music and Dance Festival, which attracted the attention of experts; in the autumn of 1961, the Hubei Opera Studio made a special trip to Hefeng for interviews and collected and sorted out some materials; in 1980, Zoumaping established the "Zou Ma Commune Amateur Liuzi Drama Troupe". In October 1983, the troupe participated in the National Day Art Performance of the National Ulanmuqi Art Performance Team, bringing Liuzi Opera to the stage for the first time, and won the "Advanced Collective Award" issued by the Ministry of Culture and the State Ethnic Affairs Commission.
