Dongqiang opera, also known as Donglu Huagu, is a mountainous singing style with gongs and drums as accompaniment. It is rich in the regional characteristics of Dabie Mountain and is a sister opera of Chu opera, which originated from Xilu Huagu. It has been passed down orally from generation to generation since the middle of the Qing Dynasty. There have been 9 generations of descendants since the first generation of master Chen Xingtai. Many old artists of the first 7 generations were listed in the "Hubei Province Literature and Art Annals" 20 years ago. In Chenjiashan Wan, there is still an ancient theater building that has gone through 200 years of wind and rain. In the hall, there is a plaque inscribed with "Long History" written by master Chen Xingtai. Men, women, old and young here can sing a few lines of Dongqiang. Chen Yuezhou, who is over 70 years old this year, can perform a play with his whole family. During the "Cultural Revolution", the opera troupe in the village was banned, but people still passed it down orally in private. Chen Guisheng, the current convener of the Dongqiang opera troupe in the village, started to learn to sing Dongqiang at that time. In the nine generations of inheritance, the Chenjiashan Opera Troupe broke the tradition of women performing and men singing, and began to train female actors. At present, the actors of the troupe can sing more than 50 of the 72 types of Dongqiang Opera, and retain 30 large-scale plays such as "Pearl Tower", "Qin Xianglian", "The Fairy and the Fairy", and 30 small and medium-sized plays such as "Blocking the Horse", "Teaching Children", and "Standing on the Flower Wall". Today, the Chenjiashan Opera Troupe is still very popular in Luotian, Macheng, Jinzhai, and Xinxian. After the eighth day of the first lunar month every year, the troupe will perform outside and will not return home to busy with spring farming until March. During traditional festivals, weddings and funerals, villagers from a hundred miles away will come if invited; the county square, the village hillside, the farmer's main hall, and the bridal chamber are all their singing stages. It is reported that the villagers of Chenjiashan are simple and honest, and no one in the village has committed a crime since the land reform. "Dongqiang opera is an 'antique'." Director Guo Xiaoshuang of Luotian County Cultural Bureau told reporters that during the Tang and Song dynasties, local villagers in Luotian spontaneously created folk vocal music such as "Oh He Qiang", "Fan Qiang", and "Picking Tea Tune" in their spare time from work and life. Especially during the busy farming season, the sound of "Oh He" was heard everywhere in the fields, and people sang here and there. Singers with good voices can sing over several hills. Coupled with the natural echo produced by the unique landform, it forms a stirring song. When Su Dongpo was the deputy envoy of Huangzhou Tuanlian (equivalent to the current deputy commander of the military sub-district), he once inspected Luotian and was shocked by Luotian's "Fan Qiang" and called the singers "chicken people". Dongqiang opera was created on the basis of "Oh He Qiang", "Fan Qiang", and "Picking Tea Tune". "The vocalization part of Dongqiang opera is in the throat. According to today's standards, it is not a scientific vocalization method, but it is indeed original." Director Guo said. Villager Chen Guiming is the sixth-generation inheritor of Dongqiang opera and the current director of the Chenjiashan Dongqiang opera amateur troupe. He introduced that there is an unwritten clan rule in the Chen family Dongqiang opera, which is to only pass it on to the clan and not to outsiders. In the past, there was a rule of "passing it on to men but not to women" because Dongqiang opera has the tradition of "women acting and men singing", but in the 9 generations of inheritance, this tradition was gradually broken, and Chenjiashan began to train female actors, "but only teach daughters-in-law, not girls." Master Chen also introduced that in order to prevent hand-copying errors, Chen's Dongqiang opera has never had a script, and it depends entirely on the master to pass it on word by word, word by word, and word by word, which has kept Chenjiashan's Dongqiang opera always in its ancient original ecology. Now, there are more than 30 large and small tragedies and comedies handed down from the ancestors of the Chen family Dongqiang opera, such as "Family Righteousness", "Blood Palm Print", "White Cloth Building", etc.
