Tuanfeng County peasant paintings are based on the local conditions and customs of eastern Hubei, folk stories, folk traditions, and folk production and living customs; they have widely absorbed the artistic nutrition of folk paper-cutting, shadow puppetry, drama, embroidery, cross-stitching, printing, etc.; with full panoramic composition, exaggerated expression techniques, and unified and dignified color effects, they have formed a unique artistic style of Tuanfeng peasant paintings. Tuanfeng County peasant painting creation emerged in the early 1980s. In 1983, Tuanfeng County's first peasant painting "Mountain Village Car Race" was exhibited in Beijing at the first National Peasant Painting Exhibition and won the third prize. It opened the precedent for Tuanfeng peasant paintings to go beyond Tuanfeng, to the whole country, and to the world. In 1985, after careful training, a group of amateur painting experts emerged. They are: Wu Chun'e, a farmer from Wulongan Village, Huilongshan Town; Wu Houzhi, a farmer from Huangjia Datang Village; Lei Qiuhong, a farmer from Wanjiashan Village; Wu Shimin, director of the town cultural station; Hua Yihe, the former director of the Dandian Town Cultural Station; Wang Tiancai, director of the Zongluzui Town Cultural Station; Ni Hanling, a farmer from Shanchong Village, Fanggaoping Town; Hua Xianfang, a farmer from Tuanfeng Town, etc. Their paintings have received great attention and praise from the art world for their distinctive national cultural characteristics, strong local flavor, strong and gorgeous colors, and simple and lovely shapes. In 1987, when 8 peasant paintings were selected to apply for the title of "Hometown of Modern Folk Painting" to the state, 5 works were created by current Tuanfeng artists, including "Bird's Nest" and "Sable Playing with Grapes" by Wu Chun'e, "Sunning Red Persimmons" by Hua Yihe, "Harvesting Reeds" by Wu Shiming, and "Shadow Play" by Ni Hanling. Afterwards, these eight works were selected for the "First China Art Festival Modern Folk Painting Exhibition" and were exhibited in Beijing. All the works exhibited were collected by the National Art Museum of China. Among them, copies of "Harvesting Reeds" and "Bird's Nest" were purchased by American collectors. In 1988, the county became the first batch of folk painting towns named by the Ministry of Culture. Tuanfeng peasant painting authors are mainly distributed in five towns, including Huilongshan, Dandian, Fanggaoping, Zongluzui and Macao Temple. There are nearly 50 basic authors, of which 15 people's works were exhibited in exhibitions held at the national and provincial levels, with a total of 93 works exhibited. CCTV, Guangming Daily, China Culture News, Hubei TV and many other news media have reported and commented on them. In 1998, 5 works of Tuanfeng won the National Folk Painting Competition. In December of the same year, 11 works were selected for the Hubei Folk Painting Competition, and 2 works won awards. Four works including "Golden Rice Fields" were collected by Canadian collectors. In 2000, 5 works were selected for the "Collection of Modern Chinese Folk Paintings". Since the establishment of Tuanfeng County, a total of 15 works of the county have been shipped overseas and become treasures of foreign and Taiwanese businessmen; 16 works have been exhibited in countries and regions such as Japan, Singapore and Taiwan. On October 26, 2007, the Tuanfeng County Federation of Literary and Art Circles was formally established. In order to polish the golden signboard of "Tuanfeng Peasant Painting Township", the Tuanfeng County Folk Artists Association and the County Calligraphers and Painters Association were quickly established, and peasant painting creation training activities were actively carried out. In May 2009, the large-scale hardcover book of calligraphy and painting "Tuanfeng Calligraphy and Painting Works Collection" by the County Federation of Literary and Art Circles was officially published and issued by China Pictorial Publishing House. The collection includes nearly 300 paintings and calligraphy works by more than 40 Tuanfeng peasant painters and enthusiasts. The oldest author is 106 years old, and the youngest is only in his teens. Tuanfeng County Federation of Literary and Art Circles was therefore awarded the title of the advanced unit in the creation of the "one county, one product" literary and artistic brand in the province. On May 25, 2010, in order to create the characteristic cultural brand of Tuanfeng peasant painting, Tuanfeng County held a peasant painting creation meeting in Zongluzui Town. Ten peasant painters from the county, including Hua Yihe, Xiong Fuxin, Wang Tiancai, Wu Shiming, Xiong Yicheng, and Lei Lihuan, attended the meeting with their new works. On June 9, the first peasant painting society in the province was established in Tuanfeng, providing an organizational guarantee for further discovering talents, producing works, and producing fine works for Tuanfeng peasant painting creation, and prospering the creation of Tuanfeng peasant painting. In August 2010, Hua Yihe's "Pheasant Field", Ni Xianghua's "Achu Opera", and Wu Shiming's "Morning Song of Hometown" were selected for the National Peasant Painting Exhibition held in Yinchuan, Ningxia. On October 19, the Tuanfeng County Peasant Painting Creation Training Class opened as scheduled. More than 30 peasant painting authors from the county gathered on the seventh floor of the county radio and television building. Among them were 88-year-old old lady Wu Chun'e, township cultural station directors, authentic farmers, and school art teachers who had just come into contact with peasant paintings. However, they all listened to the class seriously and received guidance like primary school students, and began a three-day peasant painting creation training. From October 25 to 28, Tuanfeng peasant paintings were exhibited at the Hubei Cultural Industry Investment Expo held at the Wuhan Science and Technology Convention and Exhibition Center, and quickly became a beautiful landscape of the Expo. Today, Tuanfeng County has vigorously created the overall atmosphere of a peasant painting village. Peasant paintings are hung on stations, roads, government agencies, enterprises, institutions, hotels, etc., and the news media have publicity and the tourism festival will promote them. At the same time, the county has also established the Tuanfeng County Peasant Painting Cultural Development Company, which designs and produces peasant paintings into handicrafts and puts them into the tourism market, and makes them into food gift boxes for the packaging of products of the well-known enterprise Yongxin Food Company, and sells them to large supermarkets in major cities across the country, so that Tuanfeng peasant paintings have rapidly expanded their popularity and increased their influence. At 10 am on November 18, Tuanfeng County Farmers' Painting Museum officially opened to welcome guests. This is another move by the county to vigorously build a characteristic cultural brand of "Farmers' Painting Village". Tuanfeng Farmers' Painting is rooted in the fertile soil of eastern Hubei. With the great development and prosperity of culture, this flower of art will bloom more brilliantly today as we move towards a well-off society.
