Xiuzhou District, Jiaxing City is a famous hometown of modern folk painting in my country. In 1988, it was named the first batch of "Chinese Modern Folk Painting Hometowns" by the Ministry of Culture along with Huxian County, Shaanxi Province, Shulu County, Hebei Province, and Jinshan County, Shanghai. In order to create a unique cultural brand of peasant paintings, Xiuzhou District held three national peasant painting art festivals in 2001, 2004, and 2007, and achieved remarkable results. There are currently six peasant painting creation bases and 26 reserve talent bases in the district, with more than 120 adult authors and more than 1,700 student authors. Peasant painters Miao Huixin, Chen Quanhong, Feng Yunqing, Huang Yongan, and Zhu Jianfen were awarded the title of "Outstanding Peasant Painters in China" in 2004. Miao Huixin has held twelve solo exhibitions in Beijing, Shanghai, and the United States. In 1996, he was named one of the "Top Ten Artists in Asia" by Time Magazine (Asia Edition). That year, when visiting Xiuzhou peasant paintings, He Jingzhi, deputy director of the Central Propaganda Department, wrote an inscription: "New life, new feelings, new style, new techniques." After years of development, Xiuzhou folk paintings have gradually accumulated the depth of local works and painters, and have created more than 3,000 works, of which more than 800 works have been selected for the National Peasant Painting Exhibition, the China Peasant Painting Joint Exhibition, and the China Contemporary Folk Painting Invitational Exhibition. More than 140 works have been collected by the National Art Museum of China, the Central Academy of Fine Arts, the Zhejiang Provincial Art Museum and other institutions and international friends. More than 200 works have been published in newspapers and magazines such as "Fine Arts", "Art World", and "People's Daily", and have been sent to 13 countries including the United States, Germany, France, Britain, Japan, Australia, and Canada for exhibition. Most of the works of Xiuzhou folk paintings depict the lives that the authors are familiar with. Folk customs, agricultural seasons, rural scenery, farming and grazing, fruits, vegetables, flowers and trees, harvests and celebrations, and even trivial matters in life are all their painting themes. The themes are wide-ranging, close to life, and closely follow the times. They fully express the author's praise for labor, eulogize the fiery life, and show the spirit of contemporary farmers to strive for progress, full of life interest. Reflecting the development of rural society is closely related to people's lives, which is the most touching part of modern folk painting. Xiuzhou folk painting is an important manifestation of the historical and cultural connotations of local folk customs, human geography, etc. in Xiuzhou, Jiaxing. The basic characteristics of Xiuzhou folk painting are: drawing on local traditional folk art elements such as paper-cutting, embroidery, stove painting, blue printed cloth, etc., forming a unique expression method of freedom in time and space in creative techniques, with full composition and humorous modeling, showing the aesthetic taste of elegance and vulgarity; in artistic treatment, exaggerated, deformed, and flat decoration are adopted, and the modeling and coloring pay attention to nationality and folk characteristics, with strong contrast and color tone. The works are simple, rough, smart, strong in rural flavor, strong in modernity, and full of artistic personality; the themes and styles of the works are diverse, and the painting forms include gouache, printmaking, oil painting, and ink painting. Xiuzhou folk painting has been included in the second batch of Jiaxing City's intangible cultural heritage list. Information source: Jiaxing Library Information source: Jiaxing Library
