Shandong folk straw weaving, according to the pottery found in the Dawenkou cultural site in Tai'an in 1959, has existed as early as 6,000 years ago. Folk straw weaving crafts can be divided into wheat straw weaving, corn husk weaving, cattail weaving, Langya straw weaving, horse-mixed straw weaving, three-edged straw weaving, rice straw weaving, hemp weaving, mountain arrow grass (also known as "oil grass") weaving, etc. Among them, wheat straw weaving, corn husk weaving and cattail weaving are the most common. According to the use of woven fabrics, there are baskets, boxes, trays, boxes, tea mats, cushions, chopstick cages, rice bags, strainers, vegetable sieves, pot covers, fans, flower pot covers, wastebaskets, letter holders, teacup covers, straw toys, etc.; clothing includes straw hats (including top hats, children's hats, bamboo hats, sun hats, hemp hats), straw shoes (including traditional winter "Pu Wo", as well as various slippers and sandals), straw raincoats, corn husk sandals, etc.; furniture includes straw screens, etc.; architecture and interior decoration include straw carpets, lamp umbrellas, wall decoration paper, straw wallpaper, etc. In addition, there are various kinds of straw braids as semi-finished products. According to the craftsmanship, there are braided goods, bricklaying goods, stringing goods, and nailing goods. As a traditional arts and crafts and farm handicraft products, straw weaving is spread all over Shandong Province, and the more concentrated areas are Yantai City, Weifang City, Binzhou Area, Liaocheng Area, Qingdao City and Jinan City. The area around Shahe Town, Ye County, Yantai City, was the early distribution center of straw weaving products in my country, and it is still a very active place for straw weaving production. The straw braids, straw mats, straw hats, straw boxes, etc. made of wheat straw here still have traditional characteristics. Straw braids such as "Shahe Yellow", "Shahe White" and thousands of "pattern braids" are well-made with regular craftsmanship and exquisite production, and are very famous both at home and abroad. However, in recent years, the main straw weaving products in Yantai City have changed from wheat straw weaving products to corn husk weaving products. Corn husk carpets in Haiyang, Rushan and other cities, "Malianduo" baskets in Haiyang, pole-wrapped baskets in Longkou, and corn husk door curtains in Zhaoyuan are all hot-selling products with characteristics. Changyi County in Weifang City is famous for its hand-woven straw hats. The golden silk straw hats produced locally are known to be precious. To this day, most rural women in the county can hand-weave various forms of straw hats. Tancheng County in Linyi area is a famous production area for Langya grass weaving products. Ya grass, also known as yellow grass, is called "Ya grass" because its main production area, Tancheng County, was Ya County in the Qin Dynasty. The leaves of Ya grass are slender, soft and elastic, very suitable for weaving. Local people have used it to weave straw sandals for generations. In 1913, Yang Xitang and others in the local area created a weaving straw hat craft with ramie as the warp and Langya grass as the weft based on the folk weaving method, which made the straw hats woven with Ya grass famous all over the world. There are various techniques for weaving Langya grass: "Wind Eye Weaving" has a harmonious rhythm, "Eagle Claw Pattern" is lively and dynamic, and "Rope and Grass Weaving" has an open style. The combination of several weaving methods has the effect of virtuality and reality, density, light and dark. In addition to straw hats, Ya grass products also include slippers, baskets, teacup covers, fruit boxes, flower boxes, etc. Pingdu City is also a traditional area for straw weaving in Shandong, and its products are most distinctive in wheat straw braids and straw tea mats. Boxing County in Binzhou area uses twisted weaving technology to weave cattail tea mats and cushions, which are quite unique. In recent years, various grass wall mats are made of reeds and cattails, making traditional straw weaving an indoor building material for modern buildings. Shandong straw weaving has a very rich craft method, commonly used are plaiting, flat weaving, twisted weaving, flower weaving (such as "Ma Lin Duo", "buckle", "chain buckle", "small wave flower", "cross buckle", "zigzag buckle", "dumpling buckle", "plum blossom buckle", etc.), cone laying, stringing, stringing nails, connecting, wrapping buckles, wrapping saws, wrapping edges, wrapping paintings, wrapping, twisting weaving, rolling and folding, sewing and embroidery, pasting, cutting flowers and tying. With the improvement of modern science and technology, various mechanical products and artificial synthetic material products are flooding all areas of human life. This has brought challenges to straw weaving handicrafts, but also brought them great opportunities for development. On the one hand, mechanical products and artificial synthetic material products have replaced straw products in some areas; on the other hand, people in some industrially developed countries are generally tired of mechanical products, and are increasingly interested in handicrafts using natural raw materials. Some have put forward the slogan of "returning to nature", which has doubled the value of straw weaving handicrafts and increasingly involved more aspects of people's lives. Shandong straw weaving, a handicraft with a profound history and folk traditions, will become a modern folk handicraft with a contemporary style in the hands of the creative Shandong people, and will weave happiness, harmony and satisfaction for the modern life of all mankind.
