Wendeng Straw Weaving
Straw weaving is one of the ancient weaving techniques in my country. It originated from the early human use of branches, leaves, roots and stems of plants as raw materials to weave objects. Wendeng straw weaving is a handicraft woven by local peasant women using various flexible herbs as raw materials through creative artistic processing. Wendeng straw weaving reached its peak from the mid-Qing Dynasty to the Republic of China. In the 1970s and 1980s, it was promoted and popularized throughout the county as an important handicraft industry, making great contributions to the development of the local economy. In the old days, almost everyone in Wendeng knew how to weave straw. In addition, many straw weaving artists have continuously explored and researched, making the modern Wendeng straw weaving technology reach a relatively high level. Wendeng straw weaving uses local materials, mainly local seaweed, cattail, corn husk, mat grass, thatch, wheat straw and other local herbs as resources, and is made through the steps of conception, material selection, coloring, weaving, and drying. The main categories include cattail tea mats, sitting cushions, door curtains, mats, handbags, carpets, sleeping mats, etc. The products have diverse shapes and are environmentally friendly. They have the artistic characteristics of "simple but not vulgar, true but not clumsy", and are deeply loved by local people. Wendeng straw weaving is complex, mainly including braiding, flat weaving, twisting, and flower weaving, which reflects the ingenuity of Jiaodong people. Wendeng straw weaving skills are constantly innovating with the development of the times. It has gradually developed from the original daily necessities into household items and works of art that adapt to the lifestyle of modern people, further adapting to and meeting the diverse needs of modern people, and can produce good economic and social benefits. At the same time, traditional straw weaving skills are an important representative of the farming culture in the Jiaodong area. Strengthening the rescue and protection of straw weaving skills is of great value to understanding the traditional creation concepts and historical changes of traditional culture contained therein.
