Historical Centre of the City of Arequipa

Built on volcanic rock, Arequipa's historic center is a fusion of European and indigenous building techniques and features, as exemplified by the work of colonial masters and Creole and Indian stonemasons. This combination of influences is evident in the city's solid walls, arches and vaults, courtyards and open spaces, and the elaborate Baroque decoration of its facades.

Surtsey

Surtsey is a volcanic island located approximately 32 km off the south coast of Iceland. It was formed by a volcanic eruption between 1963 and 1967. The island is all the more remarkable for the fact that it has been carefully preserved since its creation, providing a pristine natural laboratory. Surtsey has long provided unique information on the colonization of new lands by plants and animals, as it has not been disturbed by humans. Since the island was first studied in 1964, scientists have observed seeds arriving with ocean currents, the emergence of molds, bacteria and fungi, and in 1965 the first vascular plants, which by the end of the first decade numbered 10. By 2004, the number of vascular plants reached 60, in addition to 75 species of bryophytes, 71 species of lichens and 24 species of fungi. 89 bird species have been recorded on Surtsey, 57 of which breed elsewhere in Iceland. The 141-hectare island is also home to 335 species of invertebrates.

Historic Centre of Camagüey

One of the first seven villages founded by the Spanish in Cuba, Camaguey was an urban centre in the interior, mainly engaged in livestock and sugar production. The town was settled in 1528 on its present site and developed in an irregular urban pattern with large and small squares, winding streets, alleys and irregular urban blocks, which is very unusual for Latin American colonial towns located in the plains. The 54-hectare historic centre of Camaguey is an outstanding example of a traditional urban settlement relatively far from the main trade routes. The Spanish colonists were influenced by medieval Europe in the layout of the city and in the traditional building techniques brought to the Americas by their stonemasons and master builders. The heritage reflects the influence of many styles from various eras: neoclassicism, eclecticism, art deco, neocolonialism and some art nouveau and rationalism.

Historic City of Vigan

Founded in the 16th century, Vigan is the best-preserved example of Spanish colonial town planning in Asia. Its architecture reflects a fusion of cultural elements from other parts of the Philippines, China, and Europe, resulting in a unique culture and townscape with no parallels found anywhere else in East and Southeast Asia.

Historic Centre of Santa Cruz de Mompox

Founded in 1540 on the banks of the Magdalena River, Mompos played an important role in the Spanish colonization of northern South America. From the 16th to the 19th century, the city developed along the river, with the main street acting as a levee. The historic center preserves the harmony of the urban landscape. Most of the buildings are still used for their original purpose, providing a glimpse into the Spanish colonial city.

Ruins of León Viejo

León Viejo is one of the oldest Spanish colonial settlements in the Americas. It did not develop, so its ruins are an outstanding testimony to the social and economic structure of the Spanish Empire in the 16th century. In addition, the site has great archaeological potential.

Historic Bridgetown and its Garrison

Historic Bridgetown and its Garrison is an outstanding example of British colonial architecture, consisting of a well-preserved old town built in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, which bears witness to the expansion of Britain's Atlantic colonial empire. The site also includes the nearby military garrison, which consists of numerous historic buildings. The site's meandering urban layout demonstrates the different approach to colonial town planning compared to the Spanish and Dutch colonial cities in the region, which were built on a grid plan.

Historic Centre of Oaxaca and Archaeological Site of Monte Albán

Inhabited for 1,500 years by a variety of peoples, including the Olmecs, Zapotecs and Mixtecs, Monte Alban’s terraces, dams, canals, pyramids and artificial mounds were carved out of the mountain as a symbol of sacred topography. The nearby city of Oaxaca, laid out on a grid, is a prime example of town planning during the Spanish colonial period. The solidity and volume of the city’s buildings suggest they were adapted to the earthquake-prone region where these architectural gems were built.

Old Town Lunenburg

Lunenburg is the most complete surviving British colonial plan in North America. Founded in 1753, the city retains its original layout and overall appearance, based on a rectangular grid pattern developed in England. Over the centuries, residents have worked to preserve the city's character, retaining the wooden architecture of the houses, some of which date back to the 18th century.

Historic Inner City of Paramaribo
