Liverpool – Maritime Mercantile City

Liverpool's historic centre and six areas of the docklands bear witness to the development of one of the world's major trading centres in the 18th and 19th centuries. Liverpool played a major role in the development of the British Empire and became a major port for large-scale movements of people, such as slaves and immigrants from northern Europe to the United States. Ancient City of Sigiriya

The ruins of the capital built by the parricide King Kasyapa I (477-95) are located on a steep hillside, on the summit of a granite peak about 180 meters high ("Lion Rock" overlooking the jungle on all sides). A series of corridors and stairs built of brick and mortar extend from the mouth of a huge lion, leading to the site.
