Shark Bay, Western Australia
Located at the westernmost tip of mainland Australia, Shark Bay is made up of surrounding islands and landmasses and has three unique natural features: its extensive seagrass beds, which are the largest (4,800 square kilometres) and most abundant in the world; its dugong (sea cow) population; and stromatolites (colonies of algae that form hard, dome-shaped sediments and are among the oldest forms of life on Earth). Shark Bay is also home to five endangered mammal species.
Purnululu National Park
Purnuluru National Park covers an area of 239,723 hectares and is located in Western Australia. The park contains the Bungle Bungle Range, which consists of quartz sandstone of the Devonian period, which has been eroded over 20 million years to form a series of honeycomb-like towers or cones, whose steep slopes are clearly marked by regular horizontal bands of dark grey cyanobacterial shells (single-celled photosynthetic organisms). These cones are outstanding examples of karst, and their existence and uniqueness are due to a variety of interacting geological, biological, erosional and climatic phenomena.
Willandra Lakes Region
The area has been found to contain a series of lake and sand fossil remains dating back to the Pleistocene, as well as archaeological evidence of human habitation between 45,000 and 60,000 years ago. It is a unique landmark for studying human evolution on the Australian continent. Several well-preserved giant marsupial fossils have also been found here.
Great Barrier Reef
The Great Barrier Reef is a diverse and beautiful place located off the northeastern coast of Australia. It is the world's largest coral reef, with 400 species of coral, 1,500 species of fish and 4,000 species of molluscs. It is also of great scientific importance as it is home to endangered species such as the dugong ("sea cow") and the giant green turtle.
Fraser Island
Fraser Island is located off the east coast of Australia. At 122 km long, it is the largest sand island in the world. There are remnants of tall rainforest growing on the sand, and half of the world's freshwater dune lakes are located inland from the beach. The combination of moving dunes, rainforest and lakes makes this a unique attraction.
Wet Tropics of Queensland
The area stretches for approximately 450 km along the northeastern coast of Australia and consists primarily of tropical rainforest. The biome is home to a wide variety of plant life, as well as marsupials and songbirds, and other rare and endangered animal and plant species.
Ningaloo Coast
Located on Australia's remote west coast, the Ningaloo Coast encompasses 604,500 hectares of marine and terrestrial property, including one of the world's longest inshore coral reefs. On land, the site features an extensive karst system and a network of underground caves and waterways. Whale sharks gather at the Ningaloo Coast every year, and it is home to a wide range of marine species, including large numbers of sea turtles. The terrestrial portion of the site features groundwater bodies, with an extensive network of caves, tubes and groundwater streams. They support a variety of rare species, contributing to the biodiversity of both the marine and terrestrial site.
