Konso Cultural Landscape

The Konso Cultural Landscape is an arid heritage site in the Konso Highlands of Ethiopia, consisting of stone-walled terraces and fortified settlements. It exemplifies a living cultural tradition that has adapted to an arid and hostile environment over 21 generations (over 400 years). The landscape demonstrates the shared values, social cohesion and engineering knowledge of its communities. The site also features anthropomorphic wooden statues – grouped to represent respected members of their communities and particularly heroic events – that are living witnesses to a funerary tradition that is in danger of disappearing. Stone monuments in the town express a complex system of marking the succession of generations of leaders.

Lut Desert

The Lut Desert is located in the south-east of the country. Every year from June to October, this arid subtropical region is buffeted by strong winds that move sediments and cause large-scale wind erosion. As a result, the site presents some of the most spectacular aeolian yardangs (huge rippled ridges). It also contains large areas of stony desert and dune fields. The property is an exceptional example of ongoing geological processes.

Palmeral of Elche

The Palmeraie of Elche is a date palm grove that was formally planned and equipped with a complex irrigation system at the time of the founding of the Muslim city of Elche, when much of the Iberian Peninsula was Arab. The palms are an oasis and a system of agricultural production in arid regions. It is also a unique example of Arab agricultural practice in continental Europe. Date palm cultivation in Elche has been known since at least Iberian times, dating back to approximately the fifth century BC.

The Persian Qanat

In the arid regions of Iran, the ancient qanats system supports agriculture and permanent settlements. The system uses alluvial aquifers at the top of valleys to direct water by gravity into underground tunnels, often several kilometers long. The 11 qanats representing the system include rest areas for workers, reservoirs, and water mills. Traditional communal management systems still exist to share and distribute water resources equitably and sustainably. The qanats provide a remarkable testimony to cultural traditions and civilizations in desert regions with arid climates.

Cold winter desert in Turan

The transboundary heritage site consists of 10 parts spread across the temperate arid zone of Central Asia between the Caspian Sea and the Turan Mountains. The climatic conditions here are extremely harsh, with severe winters and extremely hot summers. The region is home to an exceptionally rich variety of flora and fauna that have adapted to the harsh climate. The site also showcases a diverse range of desert ecosystems, spanning more than 1,500 kilometres from east to west, with each component differing in terms of biodiversity, desert type and continuously changing ecological processes.
