Abu Mena

Pre-Hispanic City of Teotihuacan

The sacred city of Teotihuacan ("Birthplace of the Gods") is located approximately 50 km northeast of Mexico City. Built between the 1st and 7th centuries AD, the city features monuments of colossal proportions, especially the Temple of Quetzalcoatl and the Pyramids of the Sun and Moon, which were built according to geometric and symbolic principles. As one of the most powerful cultural centres in Mesoamerica, Teotihuacan extended its cultural and artistic influence throughout the region and beyond.

Temple of Preah Vihear

Preah Vihear Temple is located on the edge of a plateau in the Cambodian plains and is dedicated to the god Shiva. The temple consists of a series of sanctuaries connected by a system of walkways and stairs on an 800-meter-long axis and dates back to the first half of the 11th century AD. Nevertheless, its complex history dates back to the 9th century, when the hermitage was established. The site is exceptionally well preserved, mainly due to its remote location. The site's architectural quality is extraordinary, adapted to the natural environment and the temple's religious function, and its carved stone decoration is also of extraordinary quality.

Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum

The Basilica Cistern is a vast underground structure that was excavated around 2500 BC using giant rigging to lift huge blocks of coral limestone. It was probably originally a temple that became a cemetery in prehistoric times.

Göreme National Park and the Rock Sites of Cappadocia

The Goreme Valley and its surroundings are a scenic area entirely carved by erosion and feature rock-hewn sanctuaries that provide unique evidence of post-Iconoclastic Byzantine art. Dwellings, troglodyte villages and underground towns can also be seen here, which are the remains of traditional human settlements dating back to the 4th century.

Delos

According to Greek mythology, Apollo was born on this small island in the Cyclades. Apollo's sanctuary attracted pilgrims from all over Greece, and Delos was a prosperous trading port. The island preserves traces of subsequent civilizations of the Aegean world from the third millennium BC to the Paleo-Christian era. The archaeological site is unusually vast and rich, conveying the image of a great international Mediterranean port.

Sacred Island of Okinoshima and Associated Sites in the Munakata Region

Located 60 km off the west coast of Kyushu, Okinoshima is an outstanding example of Japan's sacred island worship tradition. Archaeological sites preserved on the island are almost intact and chronologically document the changes in rituals performed on the island between the 4th and 9th centuries AD. During these rituals, offerings were placed at different locations on the island. Many of them were brought from overseas and were of high quality, evidence of the close exchanges between the Japanese archipelago, the Korean peninsula, and mainland Asia. Okinoshima is part of the Munakata Grand Shrine, which is still considered sacred today.

Convent of Christ in Tomar

The Templar Monastery of Tomar (transferred to the Order of Christ in 1344) was originally designed as a monument to the Reconquista, but during the Manueline period it came to symbolize exactly the opposite idea – the opening of Portugal to other civilizations.

Shengjinggang

Shengjinggang Scenic Area has been rated as a national AA-level tourist attraction. Shengjinggang Dragon Temple was first built in the Yuan Dynasty, more than 600 years ago. It now covers an area of 15,000 square meters, with more than 100 halls and rooms and a construction area of more than 9,000 square meters. The temple is magnificent, large in scale, and rigorous in layout. It is a complete set of Taoist temples and is now a provincial key cultural relic protection unit. There is a holy well in the Jiulong Holy Mother Hall of the Dragon Temple. The water is cool and sweet, and it does not overflow in floods or dry up in droughts. In the old days, officials and people from several surrounding provinces came here to fetch water and pray for rain. The "Linggang Incense Market" has also become one of the ten ancient scenic spots in Handan. In recent years, the Handan County Government has increased its investment and management efforts, and has renovated and improved the temple to meet the standards of a national AA-level tourist attraction.
