Rock-Hewn Churches, Lalibela
This 13th-century "New Jerusalem" consists of 11 medieval monumental cave churches located in the mountains of central Ethiopia, near a traditional village of round dwellings. Lalibela is the holiest site for Ethiopian Christianity and remains a site of pilgrimage and devotion.
Rock-Hewn Churches of Ivanovo
In the Roussenski Valley of the Roma River in northeastern Bulgaria, a complex of rock-hewn churches, chapels, monasteries and cells developed near the village of Ivanovo. In the 12th century, the first hermits dug their cells and churches here. The 14th-century frescoes bear witness to the extraordinary skills of the artists of the Tarnovo School.
Boyana Church
Boyana Church is located in the suburbs of Sofia and consists of three buildings. The eastern church was built in the 10th century and was expanded in the early 13th century by Sebastiano Kratos Kaloyan, who ordered the construction of a second two-story building next to it. The frescoes in the second church were painted in 1259 and are one of the most important collections of medieval paintings. The third church was built in the early 19th century and completes the entire church complex. The site is one of the most complete and best-preserved monuments of medieval art in Eastern Europe.
The Sassi and the Park of the Rupestrian Churches of Matera
This is the most remarkable and complete troglodyte settlement in the Mediterranean, perfectly adapted to the terrain and the ecosystem. The first settlements date back to the Paleolithic era, while later settlements illustrate several important stages in human history. Matera is located in the southern part of the Basilicata region.
Church Town of Gammelstad, Luleå
Gammelstad, at the head of the Gulf of Bothnia, is the best-preserved example of a unique type of "church village" that once existed across northern Scandinavia. 424 wooden houses are crammed around an early 15th-century stone church, which was used only on Sundays and religious festivals to accommodate worshippers from the surrounding countryside who were unable to return home during the day due to the long distances and transportation.
