Vizcaya Bridge
The Vizcaya Bridge spans the Ibaizabal Estuary west of Bilbao. The bridge was designed by Basque architect Alberto de Palacio and completed in 1893. Standing 45 metres high and spanning 160 metres, the bridge combines 19th century ironwork traditions with the then-new technology of light, twisted steel cables. It was the first bridge in the world to carry passengers and vehicles via a high-suspended cable car and was copied by many similar bridges in Europe, Africa and America, only a few of which have survived. The bridge is considered one of the most outstanding iron structures of the Industrial Revolution due to its innovative use of light, twisted steel cables.
Semmering Railway
The Semmering Railway, built between 1848 and 1854, spans 41 kilometres across the mountains and is one of the greatest feats of civil engineering of this pioneering era of railway construction. The high standard of tunnels, viaducts and other engineering has ensured that the line is still in use today. It passes through a spectacular mountain landscape and along the way there are many fine buildings designed for leisure activities, which were built when the region was opened up by the advent of the railway.
Rhaetian Railway in the Albula / Bernina Landscapes
The Rhaetian Railway in the Albula/Bernina Landscape brings together two historic railway lines, crossing the Swiss Alps via two mountain passes. The Albula Line, opened in 1904, is located in the northwest of the site and is 67 km long. It features an impressive array of structures, including 42 tunnels and covered corridors and 144 viaducts and bridges. The 61 km long Bernina Pass Line features 13 tunnels and corridors and 52 viaducts and bridges. The site is an example of the use of railways to overcome the isolation of settlements in the Central Alps in the early 20th century, with a significant and lasting socio-economic impact on mountain life. It constitutes an outstanding technical, architectural and environmental whole, embodying achievements in architecture and civil engineering, in harmony with the landscape they traverse.
Legu Silver Beach Scenic Area, Fangshan District
Legu Silver Beach Scenic Area is located in Fangshan District, Beijing. It is the starting point and gateway of Shidu Tourist Scenic Area of World Geopark. It is the northern Taihang section of Taihang Mountain, the backbone of the world, and covers a total area of about 9.6 square kilometers. Legu Silver Beach is a typical canyon scenic area dominated by karst geological landforms. The scenic area is surrounded by mountains and rivers, with canyons facing each other, beautiful canyons and secluded valleys, and towering cliffs.
