Lamu Old Town
The ancient town of Lamu is the oldest and best-preserved Swahili settlement in East Africa, retaining its traditional functions. Built of coral stone and mangrove wood, the town has simple structural forms enriched by features such as inner courtyards, balconies and intricately carved wooden doors. Since the 19th century, Lamu has hosted important Muslim religious festivals and has become an important center for the study of Islamic and Swahili culture.
Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum
The Basilica Cistern is a vast underground structure that was excavated around 2500 BC using giant rigging to lift huge blocks of coral limestone. It was probably originally a temple that became a cemetery in prehistoric times.
Aldabra Atoll
The atoll consists of four large coral islands that enclose a shallow lagoon; the archipelago itself is surrounded by coral reefs. Due to its inaccessibility and the atoll's isolation, Aldabra has been protected from human impact and has therefore retained an estimated 152,000 giant tortoises, the largest population of any reptile in the world.
Komodo National Park
These volcanic islands are home to about 5,700 giant lizards, known as Komodo dragons for their appearance and aggressive behavior. They are unique elsewhere in the world and are of great significance to scientists studying evolution. The rugged slopes of the dry savannah and the thorny green vegetation contrast with the bright white sand beaches and blue waters surging over the corals.
