Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump

In southwestern Alberta, the remains of marked trails and Native camps, as well as a burial mound containing a large number of bison (American bison) bones, attest to a practice followed by Native Americans of the North American Plains for nearly 6,000 years. They used their extensive knowledge of the terrain and bison behavior to chase their prey to the edge of a cliff, then kill them; the carcasses were then dismembered beneath their camp.

Wood Buffalo National Park

Located in the north-central plains of Canada, the park covers 44,807 square kilometers and is home to the largest population of bison in North America. It is also a natural nesting site for whooping cranes. Another attraction of the park is the world's largest inland delta, located at the mouth of the Peace and Athabasca rivers.

Białowieża Forest

The Białowieża Forest World Heritage Site is a vast expanse of primeval forest, including coniferous and broadleaved trees, covering a total area of 141,885 hectares, located on the border between Poland and Belarus. This transboundary site is located on the watershed between the Baltic and Black Seas and offers excellent opportunities for biodiversity conservation. It is home to the largest population of the site’s most iconic species, the European bison.

Western Caucasus

The Western Caucasus, located in the westernmost part of the Caucasus Mountains, covers an area of more than 275,000 hectares, 50 km northeast of the Black Sea, and is one of the few large mountainous areas in Europe that has not been seriously affected by humans. Its subalpine and alpine pastures are only grazed by wild animals, and its large areas of undisturbed mountain forests extend from the lowlands to the subalpine zone, which are unique in Europe. The region has extremely diverse ecosystems, important endemic plants and wildlife, and is the origin and reintroduction site of the mountain subspecies of European bison.
