Gelati Monastery
Gelati Monastery, located in western Georgia, was founded in 1106 and is a masterpiece of medieval Georgia's Golden Age, a period of political strength and economic growth from the 11th to the 13th centuries. The monastery is characterized by its exterior walls made of smooth, large stones, well-proportioned, and externally decorated with blind arches. Gelati Monastery was one of the largest Eastern Orthodox monasteries in the Middle Ages, and a center of science and education. The Academy within the monastery was one of the most important cultural centers of ancient Georgia.
