Van Nellefabriek
The Van Nellefabriek factory was designed and built in the 1920s, on the banks of a canal in the industrial area of Spaanse Polder, northwest of Rotterdam. One of the landmarks of 20th century industrial architecture, the factory consists of a factory complex with a facade made mainly of steel and glass, making extensive use of curtain wall principles. It was conceived as an "ideal factory", open to the outside world, with internal work spaces that evolved according to needs and took advantage of daylight to provide comfortable working conditions. It embodied a new type of factory, becoming a symbol of modernist and functionalist culture in the interwar period, and a testament to the Netherlands' long commercial and industrial history in the import and processing of food from tropical countries and their industrial processing for sale in Europe.
Christiansfeld, a Moravian Church Settlement
Founded in 1773 in South Jutland, the site is an example of a planned settlement by the Moravian Church, a free Lutheran parish in the centre of Herrnhut, Saxony. The town plan was built around a central church square and embodied Protestant urban ideals. The architectural style was monolithic and unadorned, with one- and two-storey buildings made of yellow brick with red tile roofs. The democratic organisation and pioneering egalitarian philosophy of the Moravian Church were reflected in its humanistic town planning. The settlement plan led to agricultural land and included important buildings for the public welfare, such as large communal houses for the parish's widows and unmarried men and women. These buildings are still in use and many are still owned by the local Moravian Church.
Villa Adriana (Tivoli)
Hadrian's Villa (in Tivoli, near Rome) is a unique complex of classical buildings built by the Roman Emperor Hadrian in the 2nd century AD. It combines the best elements of the Egyptian, Greek and Roman architectural heritage in the form of an "ideal city".
Ferrara, City of the Renaissance, and its Po Delta
Developed around a ford on the Po River, Ferrara became an intellectual and artistic centre, attracting the greatest thinkers of the Italian Renaissance in the 15th and 16th centuries. Here, Piero della Francesca, Jacopo Bellini and Andrea Mantegna decorated the palace of the Este family. From 1492, Biagio Rossetti built neighbourhoods based on new principles of perspective, where the humanist concept of the "ideal city" came to life. The completion of this project marked the birth of modern urban planning and influenced its subsequent development.
Jesuit Missions of the Chiquitos
Between 1696 and 1760, the Jesuits built six reducciones (Christian Indian settlements) inspired by the "ideal city" of 16th-century philosophers, in a style that blended Catholic architecture with local traditions. The six existing reducciones - San Francisco Javier, Concepción, Santa Ana, San Miguel, San Rafael and San José - constitute a living legacy in the former territory of the Chiquitos.
Old City of Zamość
Zamość was founded in the 16th century by the chancellor Jan Zamoyski on a trade route linking western and northern Europe with the Black Sea. Modelled on Italian theories of the "ideal city" and built by Padua-based architect Bernando Morando, Zamość is a perfect example of a late 16th century Renaissance town. It retains its original layout and fortifications, as well as a large number of buildings that blend Italian and central European architectural traditions.
Chinese Garden Museum
The China Garden Museum is the first national museum in China with gardens as its theme. It is located at the foot of Yingshan Mountain in Fengtai District, Beijing, and on the banks of the Yongding River. Construction began in 2010 and the museum opened in May 2013. It covers an area of 65,000 square meters and a construction area of 49,950 square meters. It consists of three parts: the main building, the indoor exhibition garden, and the outdoor exhibition area. 28,200 square meters in the main building can be used for exhibitions. As a public welfare permanent cultural institution, the Garden Expo Museum is an international garden culture center that collects garden historical relics, promotes Chinese traditional culture, displays the charm of garden art, and studies the value of gardens. The Garden Expo Museum mainly serves the general public, primary and secondary school students, and domestic and foreign tourists, and takes into account professional garden workers. It will fully display the long history, splendid culture, diverse functions and brilliant achievements of Chinese gardens.
