City of Quito
Quito, the capital of Ecuador, was founded in the 16th century on the ruins of an ancient Inca city, 2,850 meters above sea level. Despite an earthquake in 1917, the city is the best-preserved and least historic city in Latin America. The Convents of San Francisco and Santo Domingo, as well as the Church of La Compañía and the Jesuit College, have magnificent interiors and are pure examples of the "Quito Baroque", a blend of Spanish, Italian, Moorish, Flemish and indigenous styles. Historic Centre of Telč
Telč is located on a hilltop and its houses were originally made of wood. After a fire in the late 14th century, the city was rebuilt in stone and fortified with a wall and a network of artificial ponds. At the end of the 15th century, the city's Gothic castle was rebuilt in the High Gothic style.
Holy Trinity Column in Olomouc
Built in the early 18th century, the column is the finest example of a monumental type that is unique to Central Europe. Built in typical Olomouc Baroque style, it is 35 metres high and decorated with many exquisite religious sculptures, the work of the outstanding Moravian artist Ondrej Zahner.
Holašovice Historic Village
Holasovice is a traditional Central European village that has been preserved extremely well and in great integrity. It has a number of outstanding vernacular buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries, in a style known as "South Bohemian folk baroque", which retain their medieval floor plan.
Litomyšl Castle
Litomyšl Castle was originally a Renaissance arcaded castle, a type of architecture that originated in Italy and was adopted and developed in Central Europe in the 16th century. It is particularly finely designed and decorated, including High Baroque features added in the late 18th century. It has preserved intact a number of outbuildings associated with this type of aristocratic residence.
