Kenozero Lake District Historical Witness

Located in the Kenozero National Park in northwestern Russia, this heritage site showcases the cultural landscape that has been formed since the 12th century after the local Slavs gradually colonized the area. There are many traditional rural houses and vernacular wooden buildings, reflecting the collaborative management of agriculture and nature that has resulted from the integration of Finno-Ugric forest aboriginal culture and traditional Slavic field culture. Religious buildings such as wooden churches are important social, cultural and landscape landmarks in the region, and were originally equipped with painted ceilings called "Heaven". The spatial composition of these buildings, combined with other religious relics and symbolic signs, highlights the spiritual connection between residents and the environment.

Alhambra, Generalife and Albayzín, Granada

Located above the modern Baixa, on two adjacent hills, the Alhambra and the Albayzin comprise the medieval part of Granada. East of the Alhambra fortress and residences are the magnificent gardens of the Generalife, once the country residence of the emirs who ruled this part of Spain in the 13th and 14th centuries. The Albayzin is a treasure trove of Moorish vernacular architecture, harmoniously blending in with traditional Andalusian architecture.

Fertö / Neusiedlersee Cultural Landscape

For eight thousand years, the Fürth/Neusiedl Lake area has been a crossroads of different cultures. This is vividly reflected in its diverse landscape, which is the result of an evolutionary symbiosis between human activities and the natural environment. The unique rural architecture of the lakeside villages and several palaces from the 18th and 19th centuries add great cultural value to the region.

Designed and decorated by the most outstanding architects and artists of the day, this remarkable complex radiates from the Royal Palace in the “Commandment District” of Turin to the surrounding countryside and includes many country residences and hunting lodges.

Viñales Valley

The Viñales Valley is surrounded by mountains and the landscape is dotted with dramatic rocky outcrops. Traditional agricultural production techniques are still used, especially tobacco production. The vernacular architecture of the farms and villages enhances the quality of this cultural landscape, which still preserves a rich multi-ethnic society that reflects the cultural development of the Caribbean islands and Cuba.

Holašovice Historic Village

Historic Quarter of the Seaport City of Valparaíso

The colonial city of Valparaíso is an example of late 19th century urban and architectural development in Latin America. With its natural amphitheatre-like setting, the city is characterized by a vernacular urban structure adapted to the hillsides, which are dotted with a variety of church spires. This contrasts with the geometric layout adopted on the plains. The city has well preserved interesting early industrial infrastructure, such as the numerous "elevators" on the steep hillsides.
