Hua'an jade carving is an excellent jade carving craft with unique regional characteristics developed from Hua'an jade as the processing material. Hua'an jade, formerly known as tea-baked stone, Jiulong jade, five-color jade, and Jiulong bi, is widely distributed in the Jiulong River Basin and its coast, and its main production area is Hua'an. Hua'an jade has a dense structure, patterns like flowing clouds and water, elegant and simple colors, colorful colors, and is made of hard jade, which is similar to brocade. The colors of lotus red, dark green, emerald green, black and white, and gray and white are especially popular, making it an excellent jade carving material. In 2005, "Hua'an Jade Carving" was approved by the Fujian Provincial People's Government to be included in the first batch of provincial intangible cultural heritage lists in Fujian Province. The development and utilization of Hua'an jade has a long history. As early as 10,000 years ago, human ancestors in Hua'an County began to use the high hardness of Hua'an jade to make tools. In the Tang and Song Dynasties, Hua'an jade was already famous in the world. Xu Xiake, a geographer in the Ming Dynasty, visited Hua'an twice to investigate the North River of Jiulong River. In his "Min Travel Diary", he praised Hua'an jade highly. According to the "Longxi County Chronicles", in the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty, people selected Hua'an jade with gorgeous pictures and slightly carved it as tribute to the court. The Beijing Palace Museum still has Hua'an jade in its collection. Before liberation, celebrities in Shanghai, Fujian, Taiwan, Zhangzhou and other places liked to use Hua'an jade to make bonsai or as a tabletop appreciation. To this day, Hua'an jade ornamental stones can still be found in the courtyards of many old houses in Zhangzhou. In 1999, Hua'an County was named "Fujian Jade Carving Art Hometown" and in 2000 it was named "China Jade Carving Art Hometown" by the Ministry of Culture. Hua'an jade carvings are of many types and cover a wide range of subjects. According to census statistics, there are currently more than 200 varieties in four major series, including handicrafts, architectural decorations, health products, and high-end panels. The handicraft series is mainly based on national and folk cultural images, including figures such as immortals and Buddhas, beautiful women, modern figures, etc.; animals such as the six domestic animals, the twelve zodiac signs, flying dragons and phoenixes, birds, beasts, insects and fish, etc.; landscapes and flowers such as pine, bamboo, plum and willow, etc.; ornaments such as vases, ancient tripods, incense burners, Ruyi, etc., all kinds of things in the world are available. They have beautiful shapes, lifelike images, delicate patterns and gorgeous colors. The architectural decoration series, such as various large jade lions, Roman columns, plum blossom columns, large murals, reliefs, dragon columns, etc., have exquisite craftsmanship and natural patterns, which are a leap and update in traditional material selection.
