During the Chu-Han War, when Xiang Yu led the peasant uprising army to overthrow the rule of the Qin Dynasty, Yu Ji always accompanied Xiang Yu to fight in the north and south, and was inseparable from Xiang Yu in life and death. When Xiang Yu's troops were trapped at Gaixia in 202 BC, Yu Ji resolutely drew her sword and committed suicide in order to help Xiang Yu break free from his worries and make a comeback, leaving behind the eternal masterpiece of "Farewell My Concubine". Although Yu Ji's life was short, she left behind a wealth of beautiful legends, including love legends, character legends, place name legends, plant legends, military legends, etc. These legends are short, concise, easy to understand, full of life, beautiful and vivid, and widely spread. The legends of Yu Ji are mainly distributed in Shuyang County, the hometown of Yu Ji in northern Jiangsu Province, as well as in Suqian, Xuzhou, Xinyi, Huai'an, Siyang, Lianyungang and other places. In addition, the legend of Yu Ji is also circulated in Lingbi County, Si County, Dingyuan County, He County, Anhui Province, and Xingyang County, Henan Province. The legend of Yu Ji has a long history, and the earliest written record can be traced back to the Ming Dynasty. According to the Shuyang County Annals, "There is a Yujiaji in the area, and the locals also call it the Chu Yu Ji clan. It is a temple for the people of Xiaxiang. The woman's virtue is great." The Shuyang County Annals of the Qing Dynasty also recorded: "The Yu Ji Temple is in Yanjiaji, 40 miles west of the government. It was built in the 17th year of Chongzhen in the Ming Dynasty, and rebuilt by Wu Jiuling in the 16th year of Qianlong. The middle hall and the main hall were rebuilt in the 40th year. The back building was rebuilt in the early Guangxu period. Ye Xianglin rebuilt it." According to the Shuyang Township Geography, "Yu Ji Temple is located in Yanjiaji, 40 miles west of the government. It was built in the 17th year of Chongzhen in the Ming Dynasty, and rebuilt in the 16th year of Qianlong. Xi Village is the hometown of Yu Ji. There is Yu Ji Gou to the north of Yu Ji Temple and Ba Wang Bridge to the south. It is said that this is where Yu Ji grew up, and there are many legends and allusions. During the Republic of China, people kept telling stories about Yu Ji. After the founding of New China, the government's cultural department attached great importance to collecting materials on Yu Ji legends. In 1987, China Outlook Publishing House published the monograph "From Yu Ji Gou to Yu Ji Tomb" compiled by Yang Hegao of Shuyang County Culture and Education Bureau, which recorded 36 stories of Yu Ji legends. In 2007, Huaxia Publishing House published the monograph "Yu Ji" edited by Ge Hengyang of Shuyang County CPPCC, which included a large number of Yu Ji legends and received praise from all walks of life, allowing Yu Ji legends to be inherited and developed among the masses.
