Gourd craft is a traditional art project in the second batch of representative projects of Nantong's municipal intangible cultural heritage. Gourds have a long history in my country and are widely circulated. Royal nobles and ordinary people regard them as auspicious objects. In ancient times, they were called treasure gourds. Gourds are also installed on the tops of temple buildings, pavilions, towers and halls, symbolizing peace and prosperity in the country and boundless Buddhist teachings. Nantong is located at the mouth of the lower reaches of the Yangtze River. It has a temperate and humid climate, fertile and soft soil, rich in various minerals and trace elements required for plant growth, and uniform sunshine, which is suitable for the growth of gourds. Therefore, gourds have been planted in rural areas of Nantong for hundreds of years, and this tradition continues to this day. Nantong gourd artists use the auspicious belief of the people in the treasure gourd to create art. The traditional themes are the twelve zodiac signs, or they are made according to the shape of antique art vessels, pavilions, birds, beasts, wood and stones. These works are all lifelike and are deeply favored by Chinese and foreign enthusiasts.
