Compiled by Huang Zhendong and Wang Rusheng Yuhuangding is a tourist attraction in Yantai City that is "splendid and spiritual". It is named after the Jade Emperor Temple on the top of the mountain, which was built in the late Yuan Dynasty (1358) and dedicated to the Jade Emperor. "Yuhuang" was originally "Yuhuang", but was later changed to "Yuhuang" to avoid the name of the Jade Emperor, and it is still used today. In 1982, the Yantai Municipal Government established Yuhuangding Park and invested funds many times to repair the ancient buildings of the Jade Emperor Temple. In particular, in 2007, more than 30 million yuan was invested in large-scale renovation and construction of the park, which gave the park a new look and made the Yuhuangding Temple Fair more prosperous. Yuhuangding is a place of beauty and spirituality. The Jade Emperor Temple built there is a Taoist temple with a mountain gate, Jade Emperor Hall, east and west wings, a rear hall and a second floor of bells and drums. It is shaded by pine and cypress trees, towering and majestic. In Taoist beliefs, the Jade Emperor has the greatest divine power and controls everything in the universe, so the people believe in him very much. It is said that the ninth day of the first lunar month is the birthday of the Jade Emperor. On this day every year, the people of Yantai will spontaneously come to the Jade Emperor Temple to pray for blessings and peace, to repay their vows and thank the gods. The Taoists will set up a Taoist temple and hold religious ceremonies to pray for good weather, peace and prosperity. Merchants and artists also come one after another, and over time, a temple fair is formed. In his article "Memories of Childhood on September 4th", Mr. Qu Zhengmin, a famous overseas Chinese in Yantai, emotionally described the grand scene of the Yuhuangding Temple Fair: Every year on the ninth day of the first lunar month, the birthday of the Jade Emperor, there must be a Peking Opera performance on the stage. At this time, the temple gate is open for good men and women to burn incense. Representatives from surrounding villages form gong and drum teams, yangko teams, etc., set off firecrackers along the way, and come to worship under flags, umbrellas and fans. The foot of the mountain is bustling with vendors, storytellers, martial arts, magic, acrobatics and juggling. The Jade Emperor's birthday festival is the most important local event. In recent years, the Yuhuangding Temple Fair has been themed "Promoting traditional folk culture and creating a spiritual civilization brand", highlighting the inheritance of intangible cultural heritage and the display of traditional folk culture. Every year, the temple fair invites outstanding folk art performances such as Yantai paper-cutting, Haiyang Yangko, Jiaodong drum, Fushan Pavilion, shadow play, Wuqiao acrobatics, and Zhoucun core art performances. It also arranges opera, song and dance performances, citizen talent shows, folk handicrafts, local snacks and specialties, and other colorful contents, which expands the influence of the Yantai temple fair. In order to meet the needs of the general public and Chinese and foreign tourists, since 2008, the Yuhuangding Park of the Yantai Municipal Garden Management Office has increased the temple fair from the original one day on the ninth day of the first lunar month to six days (the fifth to the tenth day of the first lunar month). Each temple fair is crowded with more than 200,000 people. The Yantai Yuhuangding Temple Fair has been adhering to traditional culture and simple folk customs for more than 600 years and is still thriving. It is a big stage for Yantai folk culture, a big paradise for Yantai people during the Spring Festival, and the cultural root and spiritual height of the city of Yantai. It witnesses the past, present and future of Yantai.
