Traditional furniture making refers to the handicraft of making furniture with Chinese style and carving characteristics based on mortise and tenon structure and carving technology. Compared with Western furniture, traditional furniture making skills are unique, and its contents include modeling design, material selection, mortise and tenon joints, assembly, carving, scraping, painting and maintenance. Traditional furniture making skills sprouted before the Sui and Tang Dynasties, matured in the Song and Yuan Dynasties, and reached the peak of traditional craftsmanship in the Ming and Qing Dynasties. After entering the modern era, changes in aesthetic tastes and the influence of foreign cultures gave birth to the emergence of "new Chinese style" furniture. During the Republic of China period, Shanghai was known as the "Oriental Paris". The open and inclusive atmosphere accepted the collision and fusion of Western culture here, thus giving birth to "Shanghai style" furniture with the characteristics of traditional Ming-style furniture and Western classical furniture. "Shanghai style" furniture is mainly Chinese furniture characterized by the combination of Baroque furniture and British neoclassical furniture. In order to meet the needs of life in new-style apartment lanes, the variety of traditional furniture has been greatly expanded, and new categories such as sofas or bars have been developed, with a combination of Chinese and Western styles; the traditional craftsmanship of carving has also introduced the three-dimensional carvings of Western furniture, making the appearance of furniture bold and unique, full of the flavor of the times. Traditional furniture production has gone through thousands of years of development. Different shapes and carvings reflect the unique characteristics of each dynasty, reflecting the changes in social aesthetics, productivity levels and social consciousness in different periods. For example, Ming-style furniture emphasizes the beauty of simplicity, Qing-style furniture advocates complex carvings, and the Republic of China Shanghai-style furniture has many Western elements. In this change, we can see the change in the degree of social openness and aesthetic taste, which reflects the historical value of traditional furniture production. At the same time, traditional furniture production inherits not only skills, but also the essence of traditional culture. Traditional furniture pays attention to etiquette decoration, and the size is in accordance with the regulations of Lu Ban ruler, and auspicious meanings are also integrated in the decorative patterns. Through the production of traditional furniture, we can understand the stories behind traditional symbols, and we can use this to more vividly experience and inherit traditional culture.
