🎧  Listen to Introduction

The origin of the legend of Meng Jiangnu originated from the war launched by Qi against Ju. In the fourth year of Duke Zhuang of Qi (550 BC), Duke Zhuang of Qi sent generals Qi Liang and Hua Zhou to lead soldiers to attack Ju. As a result, Qi Liang was captured and killed by Ju soldiers. After the war, Meng Jiangnu, Qi Liang's newly married wife, missed her husband so much that she decided to go to Ju to find him. Meng Jiangnu cried all the way and came to Jucheng despite her fatigue. When she saw her husband's head hanging on the city wall, she felt heartbroken and burst into tears. With a muffled thunder, the mountain shook and the earth shook. The city wall where Qi Liang's head was hung collapsed, burying Meng Jiangnu together with him. People dug up the collapsed soil and rocks, but they could not find the heads of Meng Jiangnu and Qi Liang. People said that their love in the world continued, and they continued their marriage in the underworld and became husband and wife again. This is the legend of Meng Jiangnu widely circulated in Ju and surrounding areas. The legend of Meng Jiangnu spread throughout the country. Unlike the Meng Jiangnu legend spread in other places, the Meng Jiangnu legend spread in Judi, where the story took place, is not about the Qin Great Wall and the relationship between Qin Shihuang and Meng Jiangnu, but about the Qi Great Wall and the Qi-Ju War and the entanglement between Meng Jiangnu. In the legend of Judi, the tragic result of the separation of husband and wife due to the war is a typical feature of the legend of Judi. To this day, elderly women in Ju County still express their feelings with the traditional Meng Jiangnu tune on certain occasions. This crying tune is widely spread in rural areas and has formed a crying culture. (No pictures yet, welcome to provide.) (No pictures yet, welcome to provide.)
