Chaohu City is located in the middle of Anhui Province, surrounded by rivers and lakes. There are "Hexian Ape Man" sites dating back 300,000 to 400,000 years ago in the territory, proving that it was once one of the birthplaces of Chinese culture. Along with the ancient history of Chaohu, Chaohu folk songs have undergone an evolution process from simple to complex, from single to diverse, and have been sung to this day. Chaohu people love to sing and compose folk songs. The creative form of "Looking at the Wind and Picking Willows" allows smart singers to sing whatever they see, wherever they go, and whatever they do. Chaohu folk songs are divided into three categories: horns, mountain songs, and minor tunes, with a complete variety and rich content. After 1949, Chaohu folk songs have been more widely spread. In March 1955, the Chaohu folk song "Sister-in-law and Flowers" was sung by peasant singers Hu Jiying and Liu Hongying to the Huairen Hall of Zhongnanhai in Beijing, and was cordially received by Mao Zedong and other first-generation leaders of the Party and the country. Over the years, relevant departments have collected and sorted out more than a thousand original folk songs, and more than 500 of them have been compiled into various song collections. Among them, 111 songs were included in the "Collection of Chinese Folk Songs (Anhui Volume)", 20 songs were included in the "100 Anhui Folk Songs", more than 30 songs were included in middle school textbooks and teaching materials of Shanghai Conservatory of Music and Central Conservatory of Music, and more than 20 songs were recorded by Shanghai Records and distributed at home and abroad, and donated to UNESCO for preservation. Representative repertoires of Chaohu folk songs include "Sister-in-law to Flowers", "Calling Yangko", "Sister Liu", "Scaring Eagle", etc. The creation and singing of Chaohu folk songs have been continuous, and have won many awards in provincial and national performances, occupying an important position in Anhui folk songs. Studying the history of Chaohu folk songs can explore the traces of Chaohu's historical changes, which has far-reaching historical significance; studying the subject matter and genre characteristics of Chaohu folk songs can promote the study of Anhui folk song history and Chinese folk music history to some extent. Chaohu folk songs are an art form that Chaohu people love to hear and see. Inheriting and promoting Chaohu folk songs has important practical significance for enriching the cultural life of the people.
