Traditional batik making techniques of the Gelao people in Haokou
Haokou Gelao batik is a traditional arts and crafts with local and ethnic characteristics. Batik is to use a wax knife to dip in molten wax to draw patterns on the cloth and then dye it with indigo. After dyeing and removing the wax, the cloth surface presents a variety of patterns of white flowers on a blue background or blue flowers on a white background. At the same time, during the dyeing process, the wax as a dye-resistant agent naturally cracks, making the cloth surface present a special "ice pattern", which is particularly charming. Batik is the essence of the folk art of the Miao and Gelao people. It has rich patterns and elegant colors. It has a unique ethnic style and strong local characteristics. It is very practical and has artistic appreciation value. It was included in the sixth batch of representative projects of Chongqing's intangible cultural heritage in 2019.
