"Dongshan Lantern Festival" is a folk activity with strong local color left over from Dongshan Township, Zhouqu County. It is the center of the entire first month of the year and is called the carnival of the villagers in Dongshan Township. In the process of hundreds of years of development, "Dongshan Lantern Festival" has continuously absorbed the essence of religious literature and art, and has undergone great changes in both content and performance form. Dongshan Township has had the saying of "lantern festival" and "welcoming lanterns" since ancient times. Every year from the twelfth lunar month, farmers start making lanterns, break bamboo to tie lanterns, paste lanterns and tie torches. Folk artists tie various colored lanterns with different lamps, including portable palace lanterns, Bagua lanterns, and pictographic chicken, duck, and fish lanterns, lifelike goldfish and butterflies, bright and beautiful lotus and lilies, sweet peaches and pomegranates, and various red palace lanterns; there are also back lanterns, about 2 feet long, with a slightly smaller upper port, which can be inserted with paper flowers, and the content is wonderful. When night falls, the people who turn the lanterns gather in a line and line up. At the time, three-eye races are set off, fireworks are not extinguished, gongs and drums are loud, and hundreds of lantern turners carry lanterns on their backs, hold torches and percussion instruments, and enter the venue to walk on the road. The lantern turners follow one another, and people dance and sing to the rhythm of the gongs and drums. After entering the village, the torches are extinguished, and the lanterns are arranged in a straight line through the village. Every family burns incense and prays to each other. At midnight, they enter the venue to walk on the road and turn the lanterns, dancing happily all night long. The number of characters they step on is kept, hoping for a happy and long life, a good harvest, good weather, and peace and prosperity in the coming year.
