Jiangxi
🎧  Listen to Introduction

The Wan'an Erlang Lantern Festival, commonly known as "Dressing up Erlang", is an ancient folk cultural activity in Wan'an County, Jiangxi Province. It is said that the activity originated in the Tang and Song Dynasties and has a history of more than a thousand years. The Wan'an County Chronicles and Customs in the Tongzhi Period of the Qing Dynasty once recorded that "During the Lantern Festival, Baijia and Yaotou, starting from the 13th day, there is a so-called 'loading of ships', wearing robes and boots, wearing god head masks, and rowing three times in each temple, which is very lively. The Erlang Lantern Festival in the city is the most popular. There are dozens of people who play the drums to protect each god's lantern. They eat vegetarian food and must fast to pray for the blessing of the gods. In 2014, with the approval of the Wan'an County People's Government, the folk custom of the Wan'an Erlang Lantern Festival was included in the county-level intangible cultural heritage protection project. Wan'an County has a profound Taoist cultural heritage, and the Erlang Lantern Festival has a strong Taoist cultural color. It has gradually improved with the development of folk belief activities. It was basically finalized in the Ming and Qing Dynasties and reached its heyday during the Republic of China. The Lantern Festival integrates worshipping gods, expelling epidemics, praying for blessings, trade, and performances. It has obvious characteristics of lantern festivals and temple fairs, expressing people's yearning for a happy life, praying for their wishes to come true, the safety of the Ganjiang River, a bumper harvest, a prosperous population, and a thriving business. The "Wan'an Erlang Lantern Festival" is divided into three parts: "starting the altar" (i.e. inviting gods), "leaving the altar" (also known as touring gods), and "collecting the altar" (in ancient times, commonly known as sending gods). It starts on the first day of the first lunar month and ends on the 16th. The "Wan'an Erlang Lantern Festival" mainly carries out related sacrificial, blessing, performance and other activities around the "Eight Erlang Gods", which has high historical research value, ornamental value, and commercial and tourism value. The "Wan'an Erlang Lantern Festival" is large in scale and has a strong influence. It is popular among the masses and has the meaning of entertaining gods and people. During the period of the event, villagers from all over the county and people from surrounding counties and cities gathered in Wan'an County to watch, which was extremely lively. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, the "Wan'an Erlang Lantern Festival" was suspended for a time. In recent years, with the attention paid by governments at all levels in my country to the protection of intangible cultural heritage, with the strong support and help of Wan'an County's cultural department and the joint efforts of all sectors of society, the activities have been resumed.
