Dingnan Folk Tales--Legend of Zeng's Hexagonal Wall in Jingkengkou
Located on the Jingkengkou Highway in Tianhua Village, Tianjiu Town, the "Jingkengkou Zeng's Hexagonal Enclosure" was built in the sixth year of the Guangxu Period of the Qing Dynasty (1880), with a history of 133 years. This enclosure faces south and is 26 meters wide in the front, 38 meters deep, with a total area of 988 square meters. The plane structure is in the shape of a "mao" character. The "Jingkengkou Zeng's Hexagonal Enclosure" consists of three halls, five wells, four turrets in the front yard and two turrets in the flower building in the back. It is a Hakka six-turret square enclosure with a lime-paved roof on the top of a single gate river, integrating the functions of home, fortress, ancestral hall, inner corridor, and outer terrace. According to legend, in the early years of the Guangxu period of the Qing Dynasty, the route from the old city to the well pit of Tianhua Village, Tianjiu Town, and the Jiuqu Wharf was the main land and water transport economic and transportation route from Dingnan to Longchuan, Guangdong, Guangzhou and other places. Tianhua Village, Tianjiu Town, was 60 miles west of the old city county and 10 miles east of Jiuqu Wharf. Therefore, bandits often appeared in the well pit of Tianhua and ran rampant in the village. The local Zeng clan members had discussed building a fence nearby many times to avoid harassment and robbery by bandits. One day, a Feng Shui master who passed by this place came to the foundation of the current "Zeng's Hexagonal Enclosure at Jingkengkou" and stood facing due south and said to the Zeng family next to him: "The Feng Shui here is good. If you build a north-facing south enclosure here, with its gate facing the river, you will be very rich." This further boosted the confidence of the Zeng clan to build a wall here, so they immediately invited the designer Bo to design the wall into a six-cannon wall (also known as a hexagonal building) with four floors of gun towers and three floors of houses with the strongest defense capabilities. They began to build the wall in the autumn of the sixth year of the Guangxu period of the Qing Dynasty (1880). Due to their eagerness to build the wall and sufficient funds, it took less than a year to successfully complete the "Jingkengkou Zeng Clan Hexagonal Wall". Afterwards, they also invited Hakka folk dragon dances, lion dances, sword-walking and fire-fighting, carp dragon dances and other artistic forms to celebrate the move. In the following 133 years, the Zeng clan members in the village lived and worked in peace and contentment, and the weather was good and the population was prosperous. They were no longer harassed or robbed by bandits. Soon, relying on the location advantage of opening the Tianhua Market and the advantages of the Zeng clan's large number of people, they worked hard to cultivate and do business, so Tianhua Village soon became a beautiful and prosperous home, and there was even a saying that "Tianhua Market, Zeng dominates the market". After the liberation, the village produced many scholars and businessmen. (No pictures yet, welcome to provide.) (No pictures yet, welcome to provide.)
