Naxi Dongba paper, also known as Baidi paper, has a unique production technique and is now preserved in Baidi Village, Sanba Naxi Township, Shangri-La County, Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture. Baidi (i.e. Baishuitai) is the birthplace of Naxi Dongba culture. Dongba paper is the most important paper for Dongba to write scriptures and has long been famous among the ethnic groups in northwest Yunnan. The raw materials of Dongba paper are collected from the local unique plant raw material "Adanda", which has been identified as Lijiang Ficus microcarpa of the Thymelaeaceae family. Its papermaking process consists of collecting raw materials, drying, soaking, steaming, washing, pounding, pounding again, pouring paper, pasting paper, and drying paper. The main tools include paper curtains, wooden frames, drying boards, wooden mortars, etc. The movable paper curtains of Dongba paper are quite special. The drying process is obviously influenced by the pouring paper method, and there are traces of the paper copying method. It is the result of the integration of Chinese papermaking and the papermaking method of the Indian subcontinent. Baidi Dongba paper is white in color, thick in texture, not easily eaten by insects, and can be preserved for a long time. According to a survey in the 1940s, there are more than 5,000 volumes of Dongba classics written with it. Baidi Dongba paper has made outstanding contributions to the promotion of Dongba culture. From the perspective of craft history, it is also a rare example of studying handmade papermaking in my country. The Naxi people have a tradition of passing papermaking skills from sons to daughters, and have always been produced in family workshops and not passed on to outsiders. Therefore, under the oppression of modern commercial society, it is likely to disappear at any time and is in urgent need of rescue and protection.
