Lufeng Qilin Dance is one of the traditional sports activities in Lufeng that integrates martial arts, dance and music. It is related to the people's resistance to the invasion of foreign races in history, and later evolved into a cultural and entertainment activity to celebrate auspicious events and festivals. It is mainly performed during the Spring Festival and festive occasions. It has been included in the first batch of intangible cultural heritage lists of Lufeng City. It is said that Lufeng Qilin Dance has been introduced into Lufeng for hundreds of years. It is an original sports activity among the people of Lufeng in the old days. It is also called "Tiger and Lion Dance" among the people of Lufeng. It symbolizes mighty and fearless, can drive away evil spirits and demons, and meet the people's wishes for good fortune and good weather. The production of Qilin is mainly made of bamboo strips and paper. First, use bamboo strips to tie a frame in the shape of a lion's head, and then paste it with Bingqiu paper. Then stick pig bristles, horse bristles or plant fibers on the eyebrows, ears, jaws, etc., and apply various colors on various parts, and finally apply varnish to fix the shape. The production of Qilin also needs to match its costumes, such as "lion quilt". The "lion blanket" is made of a piece of cloth about two and a half feet long, painted with colorful fish scales and spiral hair shapes, and a small copper rattle is placed at the "lion's tail" to make auspicious sounds when dancing. Before the Lufeng Qilin Dance performance, a red ball containing five-colored silk threads and several sewing needles and a small round mirror are hung on the tip of the Qilin's golden horn, and then a Taoist priest is invited to chant scriptures and perform rituals before the "lion" can be "released". The performance should be performed in an open venue. The "urging drum tune" is played with big drums, big gongs, big cymbals, big suonas, and conch shells to start the performance with a sound that shakes the earth and the sky, and the Qilin's majestic opening. Then the Qilin dances to the music and circles the venue to wish the local people peace, good weather, good health, good harvests, and prosperity of livestock in the new year. The Lufeng Qilin Dance performance is divided into six sections: "Opening ceremony", "Tiger descends the mountain", "Hungry lion looks for food", "Rest after eating", "Return home after being full", and "Ending ceremony". There are also performance forms such as "washing the feet after being full", "washing the mouth and beard", and "washing the hair". The performance skills emphasize its form, expression, dynamic and static state, which must be mastered according to each link and different skills, and the expression should be consistent from beginning to end. The movements of dancing the head of the unicorn and the tail of the unicorn must be coordinated, especially the dancing of the head of the unicorn, from the strength of the hands, the posture of the body, the horse of the legs, etc. are more particular. If the unicorn head is held high and swung vigorously and quickly, it shows fierceness, and the step span is large, it is fierce. If the unicorn head is held low, the movement should be slower, and the swing amplitude is small, which is gentle and joyful. The blowing and percussion of the unicorn dance are also more particular. Generally, the introduction "urging drum tune" is played first, such as "Shuangqingzai" is used when eating four doors, "Shanpoyang" is used when biting lice, "Chuanzai" is used when boxing, "Guojianglong", "Reverse Rolling Pearl Curtain", "Ditao" are played when dancing with sticks, and "Wuda Tune" is used when playing five colors, that is, Sandiao. In the Lufeng unicorn dance performance, martial arts performance is also an important part. The boxing styles, stick techniques and knife techniques of each Qilin dance team are different, but most of them have the signs of the two major schools of Shaolin and Emei, and some are local boxing. The most exciting one is "moving five colors", which means fist against fist, barehand against knife, barehand against sharp string, barehand against short knife, sharp string against iron ruler, sharp string against sharp string, short knife and shield against sharp string, etc. When the performance is about to end, eight performers take turns to fight with sticks, and the rest of the team members surround them and hit the ground with bamboo sticks to cheer. The scene is quite spectacular and warm. The whole performance ends with the Qilin head dancing again and firing cannons to pay homage. The Qilin dance performance in Lufeng has many folk characteristics. When the Qilin dance team enters the village, they must play drums and music to pay homage to the ancestral temple, temple, land god, etc. When visiting each household, the host will set off firecrackers and give red envelopes to express gratitude; whenever the Qilin dance team arrives at a place, if there is a martial arts family or a respected martial arts predecessor, the manager must bring "four types" of gifts to the door first to deliver a red card, and then enter the door to pay respect. After the worship, they should walk backwards to the door, stand up and pay respect, and the host will set off firecrackers to show their return; when the Qilin dance team enters a village, if they encounter other lion dance teams performing in the area, they must stop the drums and music and wait on the spot until they finish dancing and leave before they can start the drums to enter the village. If they want to perform in the original place, the drum head must not be in the same position; if they encounter a music group singing, they should stop the drums and music first, then approach the music group, start the drums to pay respect to the "ancestor" of the music group, and then exchange New Year's greetings before leaving; if the Qilin dance team encounters a dragon dance team, they should squat down to pay respect to the auspicious dragon, and then the two sides will exchange greetings to complete the ceremony, etc. The Qilin shape in Lufeng is primitive, strong, simple and rough. The dance and performance styles are basically inherited from the ancestors, with wonderful routines, intense and tense, and the scenes are majestic and majestic. It has certain value in studying the ancient folk dance art and sports of Hailufeng; the accompanying wind and percussion music is different from the drama or funeral music in Hailufeng. The style is simple, high-pitched and exciting, and has high aesthetic and entertainment value. It can reflect the various emotions of Qilin. It has a very positive role in discovering, rescuing and protecting it, as well as enriching and improving Hailufeng wind and percussion music, which is one of the four major music systems in Guangdong.
