Lotus Pond Dance, also known as Lotus Pond Dance, is a Buddhist dance that has been continuously developed during the spread of the folk dance activities of "Incense and Buddha Dance" in the eastern Guangdong region. He once presided over temples in Xingning, Longchuan, Jiangxi, Fujian, etc., recruited many disciples, spread the doctrine, and his school was introduced to Thailand and other Southeast Asian areas). The purpose of creating this Buddhist dance is to perform Lotus Pond Dance in funerals, using singing, dancing, chanting, and doing these various movements to divert the attention of the deceased's family and reduce their grief for the deceased. At the same time, Lotus Pond Dance also has the functions of persuading good and punishing evil, promoting the exorcism of difficulties and repaying gratitude, and respecting the elderly and filial piety, and expounds the morality of Buddhism. The Lotus Pond Dance originated from the story of Mulian Saving His Mother in the Buddhist scripture: Mulian, a great Buddhist disciple, saved his mother from hell (lotus pond) with the magical treasure of the lotus staff (tin staff), broke through hell and saved his mother, and promoted the compassion of Buddhism. The performance procedures of the Lotus Pond Dance are divided into: telling the Buddha, walking the three paths, two dragons coming out of the cave, beating the three treasures, inviting the ten directions, Pu'an Notes, commanding Nirvana, the four religious leaders, looking up, sighing at the wood lotus, sending off the heavenly king, spreading perfume, and the lotus pond sea meeting. The performance form can be performed by 3 to 24 people: 3 people for a single lotus pond, 4 people for a double lotus pond, 8 people for an octagonal lotus pond, and so on until 24 people. The performers are nuns, wearing black large-collared shirts and black long skirts, each holding a lotus pond staff and a pearl cup, a small gong, and a small cymbal, chanting while dancing. The music is in the form of flowing board, short seven-character board, two lower and half drums, fast board, long seven-character board, Yangqi slow board, Zen board, Pu'an note board, lower and half slow board, gong and drum fast and slow board, etc. The performance movements include rolling stick flower, rolling wrist flower, kneeling wrist flower, etc. "Lotus Pond Dance" has been circulated in Jiaoling area for more than 300 years. It is a popular culture that the masses love to hear and see. It has a strong educational function. The performance venue is in the solemn atmosphere of the mourning hall. In the development, other Hakka folk arts are constantly mixed, forming the unique style of folk culture in Jiaoling Hakka area. In recent years, the Jiaoling County Party Committee and the County Government have attached great importance to the excavation, sorting and improvement of "Lotus Pond Dance", reorganized the music and dance movements, and updated the design of costumes and other aspects. The music was adapted from the original Buddhist music into folk song-based music, which is melodious and beautiful. The dance vocabulary has also been sublimated, forming a folk dance with strong artistry and appreciation.
