In the rural areas of the suburbs, everyone knows about Shanghai opera, Yue opera and Huai opera; but if we talk about Xuanjuan, many people don’t know much about it. Xuanjuan, as the name suggests, means telling stories. It is performed by one person, two people assisting, and a small band accompaniment. Its form is similar to Suzhou Pingtan, but it is different and more distinctive. Xuanjuan originated from the "Xinjiang" in the Tang Dynasty and the "Tanjing" in the Song Dynasty. In the Qing Dynasty, artists who made a living by singing Xuanjuan appeared. Xuanjuan artists tell folk stories and folk legends to the people in the form of storytelling, so Xuanjuan artists are also called "storytellers". Since the audience are mostly local farmers, Xuanjuan artists pay special attention to making their speech easy to understand in order to attract and please the audience. It is said that the scroll artists at that time had little education. The scrolls they performed had no scripts. The plots were copied from the costume dramas they watched, and then they wrote their own lyrics, rolled them into paper rolls, spread them on the table during the performance, and used popular language to tell the stories in the scrolls, and added impromptu singing to suit the occasion. In order to increase the atmosphere of the performance, the performers were also equipped with a wooden fish, which they beat and sang while composing a few "scripture praise tunes" such as Namo Amitabha. This was the original wooden fish scroll. Later, the scroll artists gradually began to pay attention to their own image, taking off their homespun clothes, wearing long gowns, putting silk in their pockets, and holding folding fans in their hands. At the same time, two female actresses were added to help, with answers and calls, changing the monotonous situation of one person speaking to the end in the past. The wooden fish was also abandoned, and was replaced by folk instruments such as erhu, sanxian, bamboo flute, dulcimer, and pipa. As a result, the wooden fish scroll evolved into the silk string scroll that has continued to this day. Some farmers in Shangta area followed suit and learned to perform Xuanjuan, competing to perform in their own living rooms. At most, there were 4 teams and as many as 15 people engaged in Xuanjuan performance. In the early days of liberation, Xuanjuan art was forgotten in Shangta area, but there were still several Xuanjuan enthusiasts who performed impromptu performances. The most influential one was Sun Jianda, a farmer from Xinluo Village. His Xuanjuan play "Dialogue on the Belly and Back" was famous in all directions and won the first prize in the folk art performance of Kunshan County at that time (Shangta was once under the jurisdiction of Kunshan County). Since then, Xuanjuan has walked out of the living room and onto the stage. After the Third Plenary Session of the Eleventh Central Committee, Shangta Cultural Station organized a propaganda team mainly focusing on Xuanjuan, which toured the township for more than two months and was welcomed by the villagers. The audience responded with warm applause at each performance. In 1981, with the help and guidance of the county cultural center, the Shangta Township Xuanjuan team created and rehearsed a number of Xuanjuan plays, such as "Lazy Axin Meets the Fairy" and "Ata Sells Tea", which reflected the hard work and wealth of farmers since the reform and opening up. Among them, "Lazy Axin Meets the Fairy" was rated as an excellent program in the Shanghai Amateur Quyi Creation Program Exchange Performance. Middle-aged farmer Sun Liuyun is the direct descendant of the late Xuanjuan artist Sun Jianda, and the only inheritor in Shangta who has mastered the Xuanjuan performance skills. His performance is unique. On the basis of the original Xuanjuan art, he was brave to innovate and explored performance forms such as: the first sound of the beat, clear eyes, moist throat, and the opening remarks of the Xuanjuan opening. In the performance, he also integrated some songs, operas and funny singing segments into it, which was amazing. In the spring of 2006, he was re-employed by the town cultural and sports center to specialize in the inheritance of Shangta Xuanjuan. Under his leadership, a Xuanjuan performance team was established. Using unique artistic forms, we combine education with entertainment and create a good cultural environment for the construction of a new socialist countryside.
