The history of Liantang cake making is long. The Liantang area in the west of Qingpu is located in the Yangtze River Delta Plain. Because it is formed by the alluvial sediment carried by the Yangtze River, the soil is soft and fertile. Therefore, the rice culture of Liantang is particularly developed. With the development of society and productivity, people's demand for food is not only to satisfy hunger and food. Desserts such as Zhuang cake and Yuantuan also came into being in due time. From the record of "Customs Chapter" in Volume 2 of the Guangxu Edition of Qingpu County Chronicles, "On the first day of the first lunar month, when the cock first crows, everyone gets up, opens the door, lights firecrackers, dresses properly, worships the heaven and earth, burns candles, incense, and serves tea, fruit, cakes and balls", it can be seen that with the birth of traditional festivals, cakes and balls have been used in the customary activities of welcoming the new year and offering sacrifices. Liantang cake making is a skill of making desserts with glutinous rice as the main raw material. It grinds glutinous rice into powder, adds water and kneads it, and then goes through multiple processes to make the wet powder or rice balls into square Zhuang cakes and hemispherical Yuantuan. In addition to the Spring Festival, the Liantang area has always been popular with the custom of making Zhuanggao and Yuantuan during major events such as weddings, funerals, house building, and relocation. For example, making bed cakes and throwing beam cakes are symbols of joy, and using Zhuanggao and Yuantuan as offerings during funerals and sacrifices is a sign of piety to the gods and ancestors. In recent years, Zhuanggao and Yuantuan are also distributed to neighbors or relatives and friends to show their joy when having children, celebrating the birthdays of elders, passing the college entrance examination, studying abroad, and adopting children.
