Vatican City (/xcbx88vxc3xa6txc9xaakxc9x99n/ (listen)), officially the Vatican City State (Italian: Stato della Cittxc3xa0 del Vaticano;[e] Latin: Status Civitatis Vaticanae),[f][g] is the Holy See's independent city state, an enclave within Rome, Italy.
[12][13] The Vatican City State, also known as The Vatican, became independent from Italy with the Lateran Treaty (1929), and it is a distinct territory under "full ownership, exclusive dominion, and sovereign authority and jurisdiction" of the Holy See, itself a sovereign entity of international law, which maintains the city state's temporal, diplomatic, and spiritual independence.
The official Italian name of the city is Cittxc3xa0 del Vaticano or, more formally, Stato della Cittxc3xa0 del Vaticano, meaning "Vatican City State".
[37] One of the main diplomatic priorities of the bishop of Rome was to prevent the bombing of the city; so sensitive was the pontiff that he protested even the British air dropping of pamphlets over Rome, claiming that the few landing within the city-state violated the Vatican's neutrality.
Being separated from the city, on the west bank of the river Tiber, the area was an outcrop of the city that was protected by being included within the walls of Leo IV (847xe2x80x93855), and later expanded by the current fortification walls, built under Paul III (1534xe2x80x931549), Pius IV (1559xe2x80x931565), and Urban VIII (1623xe2x80x931644).
[94] All citizens, residents and places of worship in the city are Catholic.
The city also receives thousands of tourists and workers every day.
Citizenship is also extended to the spouse and children of a citizen, provided they are living together in the city.
[93] Some individuals are also authorized to reside in the city but do not qualify or choose not to request citizenship.
The City is served by an independent, modern telephone system named the Vatican Telephone Service,[108] and a postal system (Poste Vaticane) that started operating on 13 February 1929.
[109] The city's postal service is sometimes said to be "the best in the world",[110] and faster than the postal service in Rome.
The independent State, defined by the Lateran Treaty of 11 February 1929, extends its territorial sovereignty over an area of 44xc2xa0ha in the centre of Rome: Vatican City enclosed by its walls and open toward the city through Berninixe2x80x99s colonnade of Saint Peterxe2x80x99s.
The Centre of Christianity since the foundation of Saint Peterxe2x80x99s Basilica by Constantine (4th century), and at a later stage the permanent seat of the Popes, the Vatican is at once the pre-eminently holy city for Catholics, an important archaeological site of the Roman world and one of the major cultural reference points of both Christians and non-Christians.
